May be old news to y'all, as I'm catching the vibe that most of you are more plugged into newer and indier bands than m'self, but if the above sounds appealing, I can't recommend Califone enough. Really good stuff. They have the misfortune to have a similar name to the potentially-similarly-described (and also good) Calexico, but they are... weirder, let's say, and I give them a slight edge. ____ Phil, then Jenny, on Sheryl & Liz: >>>I guess it could be construed as a midlife crisis thing. >>Why should it be? Why is it that if an "older" woman decides to >>make herself over, particularly in a youthful flavor, that it's seen as >>a midlife crisis? (further well-stated/justified indignation snipped) Just so it's clear where I come down on this issue, I was basically drawing a line between Phair making a grab for mass popularity, and the type of artist anyone looking to create a massively-popular artist would be looking for if starting from the ground up, and that it would be someone younger than Liz Phair, which is why, whatever the motives behind Liz's makeover, it probably wasn't gonna work. So it was a comment not on Liz's wanting to do this kind of record, but a comment on the grossness of demographic-driven teen-pop marketing. Or something like that. Note that Lucinda Williams is older than either Phair or Crow, and is now making the horniest music of her whole career... with a great deal of dignity and if anything sharper songcraft than ever. It could happen. - -Rex, just trying not to get slapped with the loud-misogynist label right away... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Jul 2003 14:39:29 -0500 From: Miles Goosens Subject: [loud-fans] Pirates thing At 05:24 PM 7/27/2003 -0600, Roger Winston wrote: >I finally saw PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN today. For you BBC America watchers, I was amused that both Gareth from The >Office and Steve from Coupling had fairly major roles. Melissa and I also saw PIRATES yesterday, but Rog beat us to the Britcom punch. It's amusing that Gareth looks far *less* ghoulish playing an undead character in PIRATES. Season Four of COUPLING needs some kind of oblique reference to this -- maybe Susan can catch Steve wearing a powdered wig or something. Oh, and Melissa and I were mightily entertained -- PIRATES makes knowing-but-gleeful use of all the conventions of the genre, and Depp is a marvel. I think special mention should also be made of Geoffrey Rush's performance as the Evil Pirate Captain, where, as befitting a movie where there's no such thing as too far over the top (though if they had cast Mary Gross as a supporting character, doubtless she could find that special place), he fully releases that Evil Pirate Voice that lurks within all of us. Argh, indeedy. Strangely, we were in the mood afterwards to see ENTER THE MATRIX (I say "strangely" because we both were flabbergasted at the awfulness of the first one), but just as strangely, the only theatres in town that still had it were the IMAX at Opry Mills, a place that we will never ever visit, and a theatre out in Bellevue that had only a 9:30 PM showing. So much for the blockbuster of the summer, huh? We went home and watched a DVD of REAL GENIUS instead, which was probably for the best. later, Miles ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Jul 2003 19:52:33 GMT From: Dana Paoli Subject: [loud-fans] Pirates (ns) Oh, and Melissa and I were mightily entertained -- PIRATES makes knowing-but-gleeful use of all the conventions of the genre, and Depp is a marvel. Talk about anticipating a trend, if it's true. When the last owners of the Lobo, an old art-deco-era theater near my house in Albuquerque, were struggling to keep it open (it was eventually condemned, unfortunately), one of the things they offered was a rather brilliant option for hardcore gamers: you could rent the theater for $50 an hour to play videogames on the massive screen through the digital projection system. Unfortunately, my interest in videogames ended about the time that the Atari 5200 came out, so I never did it, but that sounded like a lot of fun. These were castoffs in the $1 bin, which I had passed on last year at full price. Also, I downloaded the Clash's "Straight to Hell" from the Apple Store, since I'd never heard it, and was curious in light of the Emm Gryner. I like the Gryner way better, and it's striking how lovely it is and how relatively crude sounding the Clash original is. But the topicality of the song is remarkable -- an intriguing choice for an Asian-North American singer to cover (not as obvious as, say, "China Girl" or whatever). Michael n.p.
