Long ago, in a time now forgotten, Michael Zwirn sent me a mix disc called "Stories With Melodies," which is a pretty apt title. It's a collection of mostly folk, country, and Americana flavored songs. This isn't a type of music I play often, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy it now and then. This is a nice collection. 1- Lori Carson- Shelter Pretty acoustic guitar melody, with pretty, plaintive vocals, strings, and some ocean waves, about a woman ending up alone with two small children. 2- Pete Droge- Sunspot Stopwatch I hadn't heard any Pete Droge in awhile, so the gap in my knowledge of how his music has progressed left me surprised by this song. It's much less country flavored and more Dylan-esque. I'm still not particularly thrilled by him. 3- David Poe- The Drifter I had never heard of this guy, but I like this song so much I've already put it on a mix disc. Definitely the pick of the mix for me. Pretty, acoustic based pop song, with nice vocals and harmonies and a pretty tune. Tell me more about him, and if this is typical of his stuff. 4- Jill Sobule- Tel Aviv Acoustic ballad with strings of a girl far from home and not in the best of circumstances. Nice melody. 5- Merrie Amsterberg- World of Our Own Making Syncopated rhythm and a mandolin perk up this one. I don't care for her voice, but it's a nice tune. Seems to drag on a bit toward the end. 6- Kim Fox- Ladybug This one has electric instruments, including keyboards, and a loungy feel. Reminds me of "Six Underground" by Sneaker Pimps, which I like. A bit slick and dancy, but nice. 7- Linda Thompson- No Telling Very much an old fashioned style ballad. Nice enough, but it starts to drag for me after the second verse. 8- Chris Whitley- Automatic Quite ordinary song that does nothing for me. 9- Paul Kelly- Everything's Turning to White Ballad sung by a man, but from a woman's point of view, about her husband going on a fishing trip with his friends, and they find a murdered girl's dead body floating down the river. They decide to leave her in the near freezing river for the weekend and report finding her when their fishing trip is through. The sort of story that keeps your attention even though the music isn't particularly special or interesting. 10- Bottle Rockets- Get Down The title sounds like this would be rocking or funky, but it's nothing like that at all. He's telling the flooded river to get down. This ballad would sure be appropriate for this area, where it floods repeatedly every year. 11- Daniel Lanois- Shine I've really never paid any attention to Lanois' music, but it's interesting to hear this, since my buds and I are contemplating going to see his set at Bumbershoot. If this is typical of his music, I think we will enjoy it. Pretty tune. 12- Todd Thiband- Sweet Destiny Electric folk-rock kinda thing with organ, sort of in the John Mellen-camp. Not a bad tune in the chorus, but not a style of music I care much for. 13- Mavericks- Dream River Wow, this sounds like a 50's crooner ballad. Even has a whistled section. Nice surprise. 14- Sara Hickman- Hello I Am Your Heart A Caribbean feel to this one. Perky and a bit different, but I don't care for it. 15- Los Lobos- A Matter of Time This band always makes me think of when I lived in Austin, and some of the music I heard there. They straddle the line between Western and rock in a nice, balanced way. 16- Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer- Ordinary Town For the first verse, I don't like this song, but then it gets interesting. We get nice harmonies, fleshed out instrumentation (though the fiddling is pedestrian), and some unusual changes in the choruses. 17- Mirah- Sweepstakes Prize Mid-tempo early 60's feel to the intro music, but then it turns monotonous, modern female, singer/songwriter fare and I lose interest. The chorus gets almost interesting at times, but the hook gets overused. The wall of sound returns toward the end, but doesn't work for me with what's being sung over it. 18- Eels- Woman Driving, Man Sleeping Refreshing title. My dad won't let my mom drive on a trip, even though she drives better. But that's beside the point. Slice of life lyrics that don't peer much below the action, but still tell us plenty. Nice tune, and nice combination of both driving and dreaming elements to the music. I suppose I should get around to checking out more by this band some day. 19- Low- In Metal One of my favorite Low songs. Pretty tune, and a nice closer for the mix. And I can't help it, but this song makes me think of "Where Are You Going" from Godspell, which is in no way a slam. If the story sounds familiar, it's because it's taken in toto from the Raymond Carver short story "So Much Water So Close To Home" (also the title of Kelly's album), which is also one of the Carver stories interpolated into the Robert Altman movie SHORT CUTS. I don't know what it is, but I had gotten hooked on Paul Kelly on his first US album, GOSSIP, and went utterly mad for him with the follow-up UNDER THE SUN (still one of my favorite albums of the late '80s), to the point that I tracked down his earlier Australian-only albums in those pre-Internet days when that was hard to do. Then SO MUCH WATER SO CLOSE TO HOME came out and I listened to it about four times, thought, "Wow, that's really not very good at all," and completely lost interest in Paul Kelly from that moment on. I was just telling my son how glad I was that he introduced me to Ween 7 years ago. I've only been able to partially repay the debt by surprising him with Z-Rock Hawaii and Moist Boyz (two Ween side-projects). To truly understand and appreciate the genius that is Ween, one must see them perform live. The boys are incredibly talented and put on one hell of a show. I've seen them live 5 times, front and center - with the bruises to prove it. Perhaps my fondness of Ween is a symptom of a mid-life crisis. If so, then bring on the hot flashes, folks. Forget Liz - bring me some WEEN! Regardless, I'll go see them again, you can bet. My son is demanding that I bring him backstage next time! -julianne (out of the woodwork and into the fire) FWIW: I haven't heard any Fountains of Wayne except the first, which I liked moderately, but haven't had the desire to play it in the last 4 years. PS I also liked the first three Cars albums. ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V3 #217 *******************************
