My new car stereo (which has a front panel aux input for my future iPod purchase) plays MP3 files off of CD-R/CD-RW discs. When it goes to a new track, it displays the title of the song. However, there is only enough room for the first 8 characters, so it has to scroll the rest. It sits on the first 8 for a few seconds before starting the scrolling. I've found it's a really fun driving activity to guess what the name of the song is going to be from those first 8 characters - almost as fun as speeding and watching for cops in the rear view mirror. (I realize that one should probably already know the names of the songs one is playing on their car stereo, however that's not easy to do when downloading albums from eMusic and burning them right to CD without looking at the song titles.) So, for example, I'm playing the new Richard Thompson and "PEARLY J" shows up on the display. Hey, I bet that's "Pearly Jam"! How clever of RT! Wrong, it's Pearly JIM! See how fun this is. It gets really interesting when you play Guided By Voices. "STORM VI" - hmmm, could that be "Storm Videos"? Or "Storm Visions"? No, it's "Storm Vibrations"! I think I did get "I'll Tag Along" from "I'LL TAG ". In other driving news, I got a photo radar ticket in the mail today for *supposedly* going 53 in a 35 zone. The Man is out to get me, I tell you. Anarchy Now! Remember, Big Brother is watching. And I bet Rob Poor is helping The Man with his wireless networked sensors. Ah well, another $40 down the drain. At least it doesn't go on my record. In terms of shooting for a pop smash it's not "Why Can't I" but it seems like it fits whole-heartedly into the pattern of changes she tried to make in her own music to fit in, the main difference being that it's very likable. I can accept that in preferring the wordy stuff on the EP to the real album I'm somewhat unusual (not on this list, but in the world of potential Phair-buyers, certainly) BUT no reason at all comes to mind for why this shouldn't have been on the album as the second single. Just checked Billboard.com, and Liz isn't anywhere on the top 100 albums or top 50 singles; Avril Lavigne is hanging around the middle of the album chart despite her record being a year old. Perhaps I'm jumping the gun, but I don't think Liz gets to tell us that she told us so. a ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 01 Jul 2003 23:50:53 -0400 From: Jenny Grover Subject: [loud-fans] mark lanegan reviews mondo generator http://www.mondogenerator.com/news.html Jen ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 02 Jul 2003 00:09:33 -0400 From: Dan Sallitt Subject: Re: [loud-fans] what (phair) download > 1.stick the cd in yr puter cd drive. > 1a. run the program specified in autorun.inf, if necessary. > 2. click "need more liz?" Sure, I'm interested in going to see the Pernice Brothers - especially at the Crystal Ballroom. I saw them at Berbati's Pan the last time they were here. Count me in! So far, I've only seen shows in the primary Crystal Ballroom venue. After one of the Ween shows I've seen there, I ended up sitting in a little barroom after the show. I'm guessing that was Lola's Room. Do you know if Lola's Room has the amazing million-ball-bearing floor like the Crystal Ballroom does? Not that I'd expect a bouncing wood floor to be a major prerequisite to a Pernice Brothers show.... Anyway, I hope it's not sold out yet, since I still need to pick up a ticket. -julianne PS the eels this Saturday at The Aladdin.
