Greg was a good friend. I loved the way he was unfailingly enthusiastic about finding new music and delighted in sharing it by telling you about it. His record label was an extension of this, it was his way of buttonholing you and saying 'listen to this!'. That Hollies tribute record shows his impeccable taste... it's a dream line up. He could be a grumpy old git sometimes, but all I remember now is the card that came with last christmas' care package to us - he always sent a bunch of cd's and toys for our daughter. It was snowing a lot at the time, to an annoying extent, but the card just said "enjoy every snowflake". Joan Armatrading actually has a new one (even if almost nobody's paying attention), Andy Questions at One O'Clock On the religious program the visiting pastor is roasting the host behind the desk about how much weight he put on. The host comes right back about the pastor's hairline. Are they trying to show God enjoys a good joke, like us? When the mood changes and the camera moves closer to the host's pressed eyelids, does he believe his promise that we will know the meaning of Christ's sacrifice if we send him the pledge he requests of us? There is nobody to ask. It is one o'clock in the morning, and the streets are rainy and dark outside the TV store where ten hosts are praying all at once in different flesh tones. A woman pushing a shoppingcart walks by wearing their faces and the repeated red color of the host's tie on her back. It's all symbolic, which I think may have been what drove that wedge between Jeff and Jen in their recent posts. Looking younger, in the sense of the phrase that tons of folks do it and that (I think) Jen was defending people's right to damn well do it, often either means trying to get rid of specific negative traits one associates with age (extra weight, crow's feet, etc.) or of trying to return to one's *own* youth. Whereas the way you "look younger" if you do it by putting on the same clothes that are stylish among the kids is by adopting signifiers of a group that's neither your age nor any age your cohort has passed through - -- you're trying to join a youth culture that may have some things in common with yours (for example, being perceived as hipper than old people... that's pretty constant) but which isn't your culture. You get the slugs of all the stories they run. What's nice about it is that the links supplied via the feed don't require you to be signed up with the Times, and they also don't disappear behind the "for-pay" archive brick wall after 7 days like other NYT links do. The feed's URL is: http://partners.userland.com/nytrss/arts.xml That's not a web page -- you need an RSS aggregator to use it.
