And why didn't I pay more attention to "CDB" when I read it?? I'm sure that would have helped. I guess I was ABZB at the time. [hip references for Roger's benefit.] Anyway, I never bothered to buy "Aladdin Sane" on Ryko, as it was the only one without bonus tracks, and I've now been rewarded for my patience. The new 30th Anniversary Edition is a really nice package. It comes in one of those little books, has lots of great photos (I wonder of some of them are from that $400 limited edition book that I've been tempted to buy) and very interesting/informative liner notes. Also comes with a bonus CD that has some alternate mixes and some live tracks. Just finishing reading "The Girl With The Curious Hair" and wondering what the relationship is, if any, between the title story and American Psycho. I'm not sure of the dates for either...did one inspire the other?? - --dana ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the internet in years - Juno SpeedBand! There's even worse news, of course, for Phair's fans who mark the anniversary by paying good money for her latest album. Words fail me. At this point, I'm convinced that Exile In Guyville was an utter fluke, and had very little to do with Liz Phair as an individual. I suspect that if she hadn't recorded it, someone else would have: that it was floating around in the zeitgeist and just happened to land in Chicago. I've never seen any evidence, in interviews or on subsequent albums, that Liz Phair has anything interesting to add to this world other than hair and makeup tips. - --dana ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the internet in years - Juno SpeedBand! I have nothing much to say about Liz Phair -- never had strong feelings, honestly -- but Michael Penn told an interesting anecdote Thursday, in response to my question, about the new record: When she approached him, she wanted to do a record and didn't have a lot of cash at hand, a situation with which he empathized. So he produced a record for her cheaply, effectively, and quite simply. At that point, the record just sat in the vaults. Then Phair got some more money on hand, her record label wanted a very different album. They got the Matrix, who did the Avril Lavigne record, to produce a whole slew of new tracks, but when the final product was assembled, they used about four or five of Penn's productions. I haven't heard it but would be curious if the differences are glaring. n.p.
