A rough top ten already consists entirely of albums i'm quite happy with: 1. Dar Williams, BEAUTY OF THE RAIN 2. Notwist, GOLDEN NEON 3. Blur, THINK TANK 4. Atom and his Package, ATTENTION BLAH BLAH BLAH and alphabetically Aerogramme, SLEEP AND RELEASE Dan Bern, FLEETING DAYS Idlewild, THE REMOTE PART Rainer Maria, LONG KNIVES DRAWN Ral Partha Vogelbacher, KITE vs. OBELISK White Stripes, ELEPHANT I like the individual songs on the New Pornographers disc without, so far, wanting to hear more than a few at once - that'll probably change. Lisa Germano's new one is too lifeless for me. I've had recommendations for 70 or so items from 2003 that i'm happy to check used bins for, and ten or so of those I'll probably buy new. I just got my copies of the new Do As Infinity and Every Little Thing albums in the mail from Japan today, for those of you following glenn's expanded tastes. cheers, - - Brian, http://www.epinions.com/user-voxpoptart _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 with e-mail virus protection service: 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/virus ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Jun 2003 15:28:16 -0400 From: Dave Walker Subject: [loud-fans] Voiceprint on Emusic (ns) Emusic has added an ungodly amount of semi-obscure prog (and related) stuff courtesy of Voiceprint and its sublabels -- Gong, Giles Giles and Fripp, Billy Currie, and a bunch of other stuff. Also, there's more filling out of the Beggars' Banquet stuff happening -- a lot more Fall material has showed up (including Wonderful and Frightening, Frenz, etc., though Kurious Oranj gets you a 404 page), for example. -d.w. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Jun 2003 17:25:09 -0400 From: dana-boy@juno.com Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Voiceprint on Emusic (ns) I also noticed that some Ash Ra Tempel (very cool psych krautrock) has turned up. "Schwingungen" is pretty great. Haven't checked out the one with Timothy Leary (I've read previously that it's not so hot, but we'll see) and I'm listening to the "private tapes" right now and they sound a little noodley. So, I'm at a point now where it's all I can do to keep up with the new eMusic stuff. My CD purchasing has gone way the hell down, to the point where I'm only buying 5-6 new CDs/records a month. It occurs to me, though, that this situation can't possibly last. Clearly eMusic is going to either have to raise its prices or cease to exist. Does everyone remember the early days of CDNOW, when they were passing out coupons left and right? I wonder how much longer the eMusic bonanza will last. If they were charging .99 a song, like iTunes, I'd probably be spending close to $600 a month (2 albums a day x 30 days x 10 songs per album) so at $9.99 it's kind of ridiculous. I've also noticed that some titles that I've downloaded in the past have disappeared from their catalog. Off the top of my head, Kramer's "The Secret of Comedy" and the whole Alice Coltrane section are MIA. This lends a sort of urgency to the whole affair: I keep thinking that if I don't download things now, they might not be there tomorrow. I hope my stinky dial up modem can hold out, and it's making me seriously consider broadband. Oh, Comet Gain's great "Magnetic Poetry" is there as well, though I wish they'd included the singles that went on the US version, which was retitled "Sneaky." Nonetheless, it's a great album that combines bits of northern soul, punk rock and twee-with-an-attitude. Live, they're one of the most charismatic bands I know, and this is the only album of theirs that has decent production. I think it was in my top 10 for the year of its release. - --dana On Tue, 10 Jun 2003 15:28:16 -0400 Dave Walker writes: > Emusic has added an ungodly amount of semi-obscure prog > (and related) stuff courtesy of Voiceprint and its > sublabels -- Gong, Giles Giles and Fripp, Billy Currie, > and a bunch of other stuff. > > Also, there's more filling out of the Beggars' Banquet > stuff happening -- a lot more Fall material has showed > up (including Wonderful and Frightening, Frenz, etc., > though Kurious Oranj gets you a 404 page), for > example. > > -d.w. > > ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the internet in years - Juno SpeedBand! Though, I'm not fussy on the surround sound option on new sterios, this is a perfect embellishment to an album that already has a quadro effect. Forget the private tapes unless you become fanatical or are in nervous wreck mode and need to chill out. I assume whoever wrote in mentioning Seven up & the private tapes is refering to "The Best of the Private Tapes 2disc set" not the long out of print 7 disc set (or was it ten). If it was the latter, I can't comment. Bret ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Jun 2003 22:23:20 -0700 (PDT) From: Gil Ray Subject: [loud-fans] the first 6 1/4 months... As usual, I go re-issue crazy which may be cheating, but I don't care.... 1. Every Word-tribute to Lets Active. Pretty darn awesome. It really drove home to me Mitch's greatness as a songwriter. We got ex-Happy Egg'ers, Listers, MIA Listers,ex-Loud Family sound man,Tim Lee, Don Dixon... .......My favorite is Doug Powell's version of Waters Part. Mind blowing. If anyone deserves a tribute, Mitch does. 2. White Stripes-Elephant 3. readysteadygo-the Countdown Records Story. Don't know jack about Countdown Records, but a group called The Kick rips into I Can't Let Go in such a way that I can barely stand it. This is an 80's comp on Big Beat. Wasn't this song by the Hollies? 4.Blue Cheer-Outside Inside. Remastered and re-issued from Italy, this record is the absolute heaviest and most psycho-delic record ever made. These boys from 1969(?), could teach any of the boys from now, a thing or two 'bout loud psycho crunch rock. 5.Mountain-Climbing. Remastered. Been into heavy riffage lately. Mountain riffs heavily. Gil __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! (ns) We were watching Conan, waiting for Brendan Benson to come on on the show that follows, and the musical guest star was Jewel. And it was really weird. It looked like Jewel, but in all other respects it seemed to be Britney Spears (or maybe Christina Aguilera is a better comparison, since Jewel can't dance). I can't remember the last time I saw a major celebrity undergo such a complete personality transplant. Just finished reading "Our Man in Havana" which seemed timely, and enjoyed it much. - --dana ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the internet in years - Juno SpeedBand!
