Tinyurls hide the actual destination your browser will go to, so the unscrupulous can send you to locations like kids.msn.com, the children's site this link actually goes to, without letting you decide for yourself whether it's likely to be worthwhile. I'm not serious when I imply that those who convert direct links to tinyurl links are trying to scam people. But I do think their good intentions would be better served by putting the direct URL in , which preserves the clickability of links across multiple lines in every e-mail client I've used. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Jun 2003 18:27:13 -0400 (EDT) From: dmw Subject: [loud-fans] tiny url didn't it used to pause and say something like "you're going to go here, hit back now if you don't want to?" coz it seems to have quit that, and i wish it hadn't. but: i knew full well i was in some msn kid space. and yes, i took the silly quiz anyway (rejecting the many many cookies), so i have no one but myself to blame. - -- d. np helicopter helicopter _wild dogs with x-ray eyes_ (fortunately sounds nothing like .38 special) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Jun 2003 18:48:53 -0400 From: Dave Walker Subject: Re: [loud-fans] tiny url On Monday, June 2, 2003, at 06:27 PM, dmw wrote: > didn't it used to pause and say something like "you're going to go > here, > hit back now if you don't want to?" coz it seems to have quit that, > and i > wish it hadn't. makeashorterlink.com does that, but I never used that service because its URLs tend to be _much_ larger than tinyurl's which sorta defeats the purpose. We wouldn't have to resort to such kludges if more sites followed these tips: http://www.useit.com/alertbox/990321.html http://www.w3.org/Provider/Style/URI Content management systems are improving, but far too many sites have those horrible http://www.blahdebla.com/4j778h/boo8--667/0,6903,925270,00.html links. -d.w. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Jun 2003 17:19:12 -0700 From: "Douglas Stanley" Subject: [loud-fans] Jon Brion at Largo I see Largo (the Los Angeles club) finally has gotten a web site. There's some nice audio files, including a Solipsistics track. http://www.largo-la.com/largohome.html Have any of you LA-based Loud-fans had the pleasure of catching any of the Jon Brion Friday night bashes? I'm curious as to how hard it is to get in. If I drove up by myself, would I be able to see the show or does it sell out? I know you can make dinner reservation ahead of time that would guarantee a spot for the show, but if I'm alone, I'm not sure they'd let me make a reservation. The only difference is that there is no cat." ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V3 #158 *******************************
