Coincidence...or conspiracy? And I danced and danced and danced and danced and danced and danced, Andy By Catherine Bremer CANNES, France (Reuters) - U.S. director Vincent Gallo (news) is so hurt by the scathing reaction to his film "The Brown Bunny," that he has vowed to make it his last. "I'll never make another movie again. I mean it," Gallo told Reuters, after his road movie had a disastrous reception at the Cannes film festival (news - web sites) and he was booed at a press conference. "Being booed at was not much fun. It's really not very nice that people are so nasty. I'm very disappointed," he said early on Friday at the star-studded amfAR AIDS (news - web sites) fund-raiser. Gallo, going through what he says is the worst week in his life, has also apologized to those who financed the film. "It is a disaster of a film and it was a waste of time. I apologize to the financiers, but it was never my intention to make a pretentious film, a self-indulgent film, a useless film, an unengaging film," he said. Critics guffawed openly at the screening of "The Brown Bunny," which Gallo wrote, directed, produced and starred in, and groaned at the highly graphic oral sex scene at the end. Many found the long driving scenes interminable and monotonous and the symbolic use of a toy rabbit plain just silly. Screen International has ranked the film the worst of the 20 films competing for this year's Palme d'Or. "Vincent Gallo's monumental folly has already become a defining moment in Cannes history. Awestruck future generations will ask: 'Were you there the night they screened The Brown Bunny?"' one of the magazine's critics wrote Friday. A clearly depressed Gallo said he had hardly been able to face his friends since Cannes critics, bored by what they say is a miserable harvest of films, started laying into his movie. "If my film is not comprehensible to people then I have failed in my purpose. I am disappointed that once again, what I like is unpopular. I can only apologize to the people who feel they have wasted their time," he said. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 May 2003 16:20:10 GMT From: Dana Paoli Subject: [loud-fans] long rambling question about technology (ns) Technology questions from a non-techie, so please forgive me if this is dumb: Our connection at home is dial-up. I set up eMusic to download 2-3 albums during the night while we sleep, which works out fairly well most of the time. In the morning I zap them to the iPod and go. But, at work we have an incredibly fast connection (T1? Something like that) where I can download an album in a few minutes. But, we don't have Firewire at work, and I don't have the option of installing it in my work computer. So I can download songs and listen to them at work, but can't get them onto my iPod. It occurred to me, though, that I could use Shari's palm (an HP H1910 Pocket PC that uses USB) to ferry home an album or two at a time, transfer them to our home computer, and then to the iPod. I have two questions. One, is there a better/more elegant solution that's not too expensive. Two, if there isn't, I thought about buying a memory card so I could carry more songs home at a time, but the cards seem to be pretty expensive. Is there a cheap source that I missed, or are they likely to go down in price anytime soon? It's hard for me to justify paying $100+ for a memory chip for something like this (if I'm remembering right, that's how much the 128Mb chip cost). And finally, so far off topic that it's silly, I've got Avant-Go working but the choice of material is pretty lousy, as far as I can see. Does anyone know of any good music related pages that work well on a Pocket PC? (Actually, I'd be interested in good non-music related pages as well: the NY Times PPC version kind of sucks and I can't figure out how to get Slate). Thanks for any help, encouraging words, etc. - --dana ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the internet in years - Juno SpeedBand! You could get one of those USB keychain drives. They're pretty reasonable these days. I think 64 MB models start in the $30-$40 range, and they go up from there in capacity / price. Any computer store should stock them these days, and they're plentiful at online stores. An example is here: http://www.thinkgeek.com/computing/drives/5994/ There's another option: http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/watches/5eec/ that's just too geeky to contemplate. -d.w. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 May 2003 13:00:37 -0400 (EDT) From: Aaron Mandel Subject: Re: [loud-fans] long rambling question about technology (ns) On Tue, 27 May 2003, Dana Paoli wrote: > But, at work we have an incredibly fast connection (T1? Is there a CD burner there? This sounds like a rare case where a CD-RW would be incredibly useful. aaron ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 May 2003 12:01:20 -0500 From: Wes_Vokes@eFunds.Com Subject: [loud-fans] Richard Thompson (NS) I think there is interest here, so the Richard Thompson CD "1000 years of Popular Music" is now available through his website.... Order that and then get "More Guitar" while you are at it... Very aptly titled, smoking show from the "Amnesia" tour... I guess the purpose of that article, outside the usual (expected?) snark, passed me by. I'm not defending Yorn here (from whom I've never consciously heard a note), and I'm far enough outside of Columbia's promo loop never to have received any of their breathless "next big thing" missives. The thing is, you can make just about any musician sound like a complete friggin' idiot by quoting single lines of lyrics out of context. -d.w. np: Capitol K, "Roadeater EP" ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 May 2003 14:48:24 -0500 From: Wes_Vokes@eFunds.Com Subject: [loud-fans] alrn (s) Dude wouldn't take $102.50 for this?
