Happy day to all the moms on the list... I'm now getting consistent downloads and decent transfer rates again from Emusic, so it looks like they've pretty much worked through their upgrade hiccups. I found an interesting label, Temporary Residence Ltd. (apparently out of Baltimore), that has some things worth hearing. The material from the band Sonna is highly recommended for fans of Papa M, Letter E, and Mogwai's quieter moments. The various split EPs (with Paul Newman, Sybarite, Lilliental, etc.) are particularly interesting. Aaron Mandel might find the new Cex record somewhat interesting (he's a pretty weak MC, but the backing tracks are consistently interesting, sort of like a less manic Capitol K.) -d.w. http://www.freeke.org/ffg ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 May 2003 16:45:00 -0400 (EDT) From: Aaron Mandel Subject: [loud-fans] The Faint, Schneider TM tonight in Boston I may have an extra ticket to see The Faint and Schneider TM tonight at the Roxy. You've got me pegged. This is actually the best Cex record yet, I think; I bought Tall, Dark And Handcuffed after seeing him open for The Postal Service and was pretty disappointed, even expecting more personality than skill. Being Ridden moves him into the realm of competent hip-hoppers, even if some of his lapses in technique would probably be considered unforgivable if he'd come up through the "real" hip-hop world instead of indie/IDM. (The show was about half hip-hop and half Nine Inch Nails-type stuff, the latter like "You Kiss Like You're Dead" but much more so, and since even my Cex-loving friend hadn't heard Being Ridden yet, I got the older record for fear that BR was all shouty-man songs.) (That said, the best solitary moment from any of his albums so far is still the much-quoted skit on Tall Dark And Handcuffed where the head of Tigerbeat6 calls Kidwell into his office to chew him out for how bad his record is: "Do you know why Radiohead SELLS RECORDS? Because they write songs about HOMOSEXUALS and VICODIN. You're rapping about dodgeball and BICYCLES!") (Sorry, third parenthesis: I both do and don't envy Ryan Kidwell's ability to create records that make people like him even when they think the record kind of sucks. Some of that is the live show, but somehow he's managed to be "promising" for like four albums now and people still seem ready to wait for him to actually get good. Including me, I guess.) a ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 May 2003 19:29:41 EDT From: AWeiss4338@aol.com Subject: [loud-fans] jen Trynin Don't know if there are any fans of her's here, but she's writing a book about her experences at nearly being a rock star, and there is an excerpt here http://www.transom.org/shows/2003/200305.trynin.html It's pretty good, and funny. I'm catching up, trying to be current here, but sorta failing.... Finally got Aimee Mann's Lost In Space, and I think it's pretty good. Not as good as the last one, but I'm finding that not too many of the new ones are as good as the last ones. But I will keep this one and I have been playing it quite a bit. The mid-tempo thing is not bothering me on this, but I would like to hear more dynamics. I noticed that on some of the tunes, the drummer uses those "thundersticks" (drum sticks that are real trendy as of a while back - sort of a cross between drum sticks and brushes....I did use 'em on a couple of songs on AN, but I think the world has heard enough of 'em.....get 'em outta here!) Her sense of melody seems just fine, go Aimee! I got the White Stripes latest, too. Ditto. Not as good as the last one, but still better than most everything else. Please....don't add a bass player. New Pornographers...again, not as good as the last one, but I like it. They seem more...playful on this one. Love the keyboards. I notice they thank GBV, and I certainly hear their influence on this. I think an outside producer would have been a good idea. Was it Dana that mentioned the Jack Bruce reissues? I'm glad it was brought up cause he is one of my very favorites! I love his first 3 solo albums and Stacey brought me the 2nd one- Harmony Row. Sounds great. I really look forward to the other 2, esp. Songs For A Tailor. I couldn't help but notice that some of his song structures are very Alison-like. Piano/cabaret...I bet she'd hate him though....too jazzy, too proggy. I'd like to close with a tiny tribute to a co-worker of mine that died last Friday. His name was Bob Hale and I worked with him at City Hall Records for the last 13 or so years. He was a Vietnam vet, very ravaged by years of booze and drug abuse, but he had a heart of gold. I went to his apt. a couple of times, and it overlooked a downtown street in San Rafael. Every Thursday, there would be a farmers market there, and he had a great view of all the goings on, on the street below. He once told me he saw a carrot slip on a tomato, and I had no idea what the hell he was talking about until one day while I was visiting Bob, we looked out the window and I saw a person, dressed as a carrot, walking down the street during the farmers market. Right then I knew that Bob actually did see a carrot slip on a tomato. Rest in peace bob Hale. I'm gonna miss you. Thanks, Gil __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo!
