Mine turned up last Thursday or Friday (released in the UK last Monday and all over the world on Tuesday). The people on the Wire list who don't have their copies yet all ordered the vinyl version of SEND (which includes versions of every READ & BURN track not found on the CD of SEND) in the same order, and the vinyl's been delayed. Posteverything.com has said that they've been running slower than with the READ AND BURNs on filling orders in general, but on idealcopy, there's a 100% correlation between no SEND yet and having ordered the vinyl. If the delay runs much longer, I'm hoping they'll just take the hit on postage and mail out the CDs by themselves. later, Miles ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 May 2003 09:15:50 -0700 From: "Douglas Stanley" Subject: [loud-fans] That Negro Problem Part of the what is now turning out to be "the life-altering CD purchase of April '03" included TNP's "Welcome Black". I never really figured they'd be my cup o' tea (too cute, maybe - I've always liked a little punk with my pop), but at 85% off, I couldn't resist. Now I'm smitten. Where should I go from here? "Joys and Concerns" or Post-Minstrel"? Perhaps I should proceed directly to Stew's solo stuff? Or does it even matter since I'm destined to get them all anyway. For what it's worth, Father Popcorn and Bermuda Love Triangle are my favorites so far. But then again, I've had a thing for Heidi Rodewald for a long, long time. "Post-Minstrel" is more ornate/baroque - lots of arrangementiness. "J&C" is more straightforward. Of the Stew CDs, "Guest Host" is the best. Hex Enduction Hour is finally there, so everyone who wants to check out the Fall's best album #1 is in luck. Save yourself some disk space by *not* downloading the final track, which is possibly the worst song ever recorded. If you can sit through the whole thing and pay attention, your more man than I. Also available, though, is another one of Mark Staples' faves, Birdie with their "Some Dusty" album. How I miss Mark Staples!! The lead Birdie used to be in the Dolly Mixture, and there's a St. Etienne connection as well. Think a more indie rock St. Etienne (or if that doesn't work, just check out the samples). It's a really nice pop album that can be enjoyed as background (nice grooves) or foreground (nice melodies and singing). Oh, I just got ahold of the first Rat At Rat R album, and it's actually surprisingly good. At least, I was surprised, since I figured that anyone so obscure would have to be obscure for a reason. A far better choice than, say, Ut. - --dana ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the internet in years - Juno SpeedBand! I love Hex too, and I wouldn't think of listening to it without every minute of "And This Day", but I think Palace Of Swords Reversed (also just added to emusic) is a better introduction to those amazing early years. (There's a really lame live version of "ATD" on Hip Priest And Kamerads, a compilation that I think is now totally obsolete except for said crappy live tracks.) a ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 08 May 2003 23:57:30 -0400 From: Jenny Grover Subject: Re: [loud-fans] birdie enduction (ns) dana-boy@juno.com wrote: >Emusic have finally finished their upgrade, apparently, and a bunch of >stuff just hit the new section. What I find interesting about that song is the way it sounds like it's going to fall apart any second. On the more pleasurable listening front, though, "The Classical" just might be my favorite Fall song. Does anyone know if the tracks on the "bonus" Palace of Swords disc currently on eMusic are different versions from the ones on Hip Priest? Yes, I could download them and A-B them with my copy of HP&K - but this is easier, if someone just knows... I'm glad all that live Fall stuff is online...so if I want to hear it I don't have to actually pay anything more for it... Alas, I paid an ungodly amount for some guy from Finland to send me a copy of _Dragnet_ years ago, when it was supposedly rare... It's fruitless, though: I think Einstein once determined that the concept of "the complete recorded catalog of the Fall" is logically incoherent. ..Jeff, waiting for the Fall's version of "A Day in the Life" to show up J e f f r e y N o r m a n The Architectural Dance Society www.uwm.edu/~jenor/ADS.html :: I suspect that the first dictator of this country will be called "Coach" :: --William Gass ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 May 2003 00:41:53 -0400 (EDT) From: Aaron Mandel Subject: Re: [loud-fans] birdie enduction (ns) On Thu, 8 May 2003, Jeffrey with 2 Fs Jeffrey wrote: > Does anyone know if the tracks on the "bonus" Palace of Swords disc > currently on eMusic are different versions from the ones on Hip Priest? Here's a lazy 1/4 answer for you: Tempo House is on the bonus disc but appears nowhere on HP&K, so it wouldn't surprise me. > ..Jeff, waiting for the Fall's version of "A Day in the Life" to show up I think I know someone who knows someone who has an mp3 of it, if you know what I mean. Someone... Step Forward?... has just released a minibox of three of those disreputable Fall comps that came out on Receiver Records a few years ago, and I took the bait. The liner notes are quite entertaining, as they boil down to "We don't know what these recordings are either", but in any case, Oxymoron turns out to be quite a good disc, bringing fire to several Light-User-era songs I was never much excited by before. Cheetham Hill and 15 Ways (Live) are much less interesting, but if you run across an Oxymoron (whose going price, never too high, will presumably be even lower now) I say pick it up. Funny how Are You Are Missing Winner sank without a trace; I think the first I even heard of people disliking it as much as I did was folks discussing their expectations for this new album coming out in a week. a ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V3 #133 *******************************
