After about one and half listens I haven't been as moved as I was by MR which maybe isn't surprising as it was an amazing album that would be hard to match, much less top. Neko seems to be more integrated into the band's sound this time. On MR I got the impression all her vocals were done as overdubs. Maybe it'll grow on me, but I haven't been bowled over. I don't think the style has changed much, though the production is a little sparklier and Petkovic's wailing is less front-and-center. I just find this one much catchier than most of the others. If it helps you calibrate, I liked Egomania best. a ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 May 2003 19:27:02 -0400 From: "jer fairall" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] The Mercy and the Caution Lights > Polara - Is This It? **** > > My favorite song of the disk. Is this a top-40 hit? Nope. As far as I can tell, Polara are obscure even among indie rock types. C'EST LA VIE (1997) is, I think, their masterpiece but this is off last year's JETPACK BLUES, which reminds me very much of Loud Family circa THE TAPE OF ONLY LINDA. As far as I know, this should be available in US stores (it, unlike their older albums on Interscope, is not in Canada) but in case you have a hard time finding it, try: http://susstones.com/polara/ > Dar Williams - The World's Not Falling Apart **** > > My second favorite tune on the disk. From her new album THE BEAUTY OF THE RAIN, which isn't my favorite Dar album (that would either be THE HONESTY ROOM or END OF THE SUMMER) but since you like this song so much it should be a good place to start with her if you wanna hear more. This and the Salteens track that I put on here are my two favorite songs of 2003 so far. > Jetplane Landing - A Miracle of Science ** > > Slow, wistful, yet with fairly heavy drums and a singer who sounds as if > he's holding back--I'd like to hear what this band sounds like when they > rock out. (Nothing about this band in eMusic, by the way--are they signed?) They're on the oddly-named Irish indie label Smalltown America. This may have been a strange mix selection as their album ZERO FOR CONDUCT (#3 on my 2002 list) is a lot more rockin' than this track suggests. I wasn't so happy with the album of theirs that I bought (unfortunately it's C'est La Vie, so there may be a difference of opinion) but a loud-fan was nice enough to turn me onto Ed Ackerson's previous band, The 27 Various, who do some really nice '60's influenced guitar pop. It's funny: I don't think of Polara as obscure, if only because their Interscope CD's take up some truly major space in the used bins of Manhattan : ) - --dana ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the internet in years - Juno SpeedBand! I'll second that. ELECTRIC VERSION is not as immediately engaging as MASS ROMANTIC, but still very good. I think it will be a Grower. I did like the second half better than the first. Who was it that was talking up Nada Surf's LET GO awhile ago? Thanks to whomever that was. Finally got a chance to buy and listen to it - wow. This band is definitely maturing. Might've been my fave album of 2002 if I had gotten it and listened to it in 2002... I just want some confirmation as to whether or not something I think I saw on television actually happened...did anyone see Neil Hamburger on Jimmy Kimmel Live the other night, with Yoko Ono as the lead-off guest? It was one of the most bizarre appearances I've seen on network television in a long time. He told his Elton John joke (which I'm sure amused Yoko to no end), and a Michael Jackson joke that was too revolting to repeat here. Speaking of revolting, the new Turbonegro album is mighty swell. Welcome back, O Purveyors Of Norwegian Glam-Punk Filth! And I'd like to know when my copy of Wire's "Send" will be arriving. I've seen it in shops already, but I'm waiting for the one I pre-ordered with the bonus disc of material from their last visit to Chicago...now that was a great time, I'll tell you what. Anyone know where I can find the best price for that new Steve Wynn album?
