Something about |the chord sequence is very Mitch. Well for one it is a Mitch penned song, and two a version exists from an unreleased solo album from the early nineties where in fact Mitch does sing it, as well as doing everything else. I got a chance to see his new band, The Fiendish Minstrels, a week ago opening for Don Dixon. The band is actually Shalini's band, just retitled for a different set of music. FMs' sound is bit different that Shalini which really has more of a Let's Active slant to it. The FMs' sound is much moodier and somewhat somber as is evidenced by them recently covered Scott Walker's "Boy Child" and Music Macine's "The Trap". Maybe I just haven't purchased such disc yet but I got the new Bangles disc (import) from Blue Rose Records and found it had something called Copy Control technology on the disc. It did prevent me from playing it on a PC CDR drive without using the CD player software installed on the disc and would not allow me to make a direct disc-to-disc copy, but I was able to rip the tracks and burn a disc from the hard drive which appears to play just fine on any other device. So what are they gaining by doing this? Oh, and this disc is quite good. A couple of songs could have been right off ALL OVER THE PLACE and have a bit of a garagey sound. There's nothing like the over produced stuff typical of DIFFERENT LIGHT which was a welcome relief. There are still some sweet poppy Susanna Hoff's tunes, it's just that they are not so glitzed up. Nice out front drumming on a lot of the songs. So has anyone gotten New Pornographers' ELECTRIC VERSION yet? If so, how is it? I know that it's not due till tomorrow, but I wouldn't be surprised if some stores break the street date. I ordered mine from CD Universe, since I'm sure no stores around here will get it (or if they get it, in won't be right away). Looks like my order shipped today, so I should have it by Wed or Thur. From the sound of things, Kurt Heasely has spent the last four years listening to Robert Pollard, to the point where he's even started to sing almost exactly like the prolific Mr. Bob with that fake Brit prog rock voice that we all love. In fact, I'd guess that if you snuck most tracks from Precollection onto a mix tape, you could convince 4 out of 5 dentists that they were listening to a new GBV album. It's not worthless, it has moments, even a couple of decent songs, but I think that this was a very unwise musical direction to take. And I'm still trying to figure out if the cover photo is really Kurt: he seems to be transforming into Roger Waters, which is another poor choice. Anyone here read any of Jim Knipfel's books? I see the guy constantly lately, and it's very odd being on the subway across from someone you don't know, wondering how their last MRI went. - --dana ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the internet in years - Juno SpeedBand! Have you listened carefully to your disk? I don't know specifically about the Bangles CD, but I know that many of the copy protection schemes which force you to listen to the CD through their special player will actually play MP3s (or some other format) that are also on the CD, and not the CDA (WAV) files. I haven't seen one of these CDs myself, but apparently the MP3s are usually poorly encoded. So you might check whether you're actually listening to an MP3, and the quality of the MP3. Senator Wyden (D-OR) has proposed legislation that would require all copy-protected audio CDs to be clearly labelled as such. At first this seemed like a good idea, but now I wonder whether it would actually lead to more copy-protected CDs, with buyers being "fairly warned" about the product's capabilities (or lack thereof). - --Michael On Mon, 5 May 2003, Larry Tucker wrote: > Maybe I just haven't purchased such disc yet but I got the new Bangles > disc (import) from Blue Rose Records and found it had something called > Copy Control technology on the disc. The more recent one, Canada's Green Highways, is good; Tiger Banana, not so much. It really did change here in Huntington post '96. That was about the time our not-too-bad hard rock station got bought out by Clear Channel, and so did the 60's oldies station and the more pop rock station. They were all pretty good stations before that. You were more likely to hear album cuts that weren't the emphasis track, regional favorite bands, even local (within town) bands at any given hour. Locals are now confined to one show once a week, and that's more limited in scope than it used to be. I noticed Seattle radio going downhill in the 90's, too. I would tune in during visits to the stations I used to like when I lived there, and I was dismayed at how homogenized and awful they are now. I even heard the same disc jockeys that are on our Clear Channel rock station here (those shows are almost all taped and shipped around) and the same voices on the commercials. Stations really did used to have their own flavor, and it was fun to turn on the radio in a different town and see what was being played that you weren't hearing back home. That doesn't happen so much anymore. Nearly every new musical form started at dinky-ass, usually independent labels, when the olde, established ones stuck with the staid tried and true. And not to open this particular rancid can of worms again, but the quality of the top 40 now is about as abysmal as it's ever been - and yes, I'll take your "glibby glop gloopy," your saccharin soda-pop straw-sharers, your dogs named Boo and horses with no names over the revolting McPop of today.
