In an announcement that, I'm sure, has nothing to do with the new Apple service, they declare: In response to the MANY requests from subscribers, we have increased the bit rate of our MP3s from 128 KBPS to a high-quality Variable Bit Rate (VBR). For those of you not familiar with the "ins and outs" of encoding, this means that the sound quality of our tracks has improved dramatically. I feel comfortable saying that there is no other music subscription service offering anything close to EMusic's sound quality. I hope this means that they'll be going back and re-encoding all of the songs currently on the site, but that seems like an awful lot of work. - --dana ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the internet in years - Juno SpeedBand! According to an item posted by an eMusic moderator on one of their message boards a few days ago, they do plan on re-encoding everything. In the early days of MP3, some players had problems with VBR files, but unless you're still running WinAmp 0.3 from 1997 you should be fine. On the topic of indies and Apple's music store, a Matador rep had this to say on their message boards: > iTunes and Matador > > Hi Kirillov, > > Patrick asked me to respond to you on Matador's plans to be involved > with > the iTunes subscription service. > > The short answer is Apple hasn't asked to license Matador music yet, > and it's > not because we were barking up the wrong tree for the last couple > months. > I think it was probably all Apple could do given the resources they > made > available for this project to roll it out with the Major content they > had. > > It's a drag that Apple chose to focus their huge publicity blast on > artists > that so desperately need promotion (Eminen?) but we're definitely > interested > in being involved and I hope it won't belong until you see Matador > music up > there as well. Could be the show of the year, unless Jesse's lying again. I didn't know how to form the plural until I read the press release. - --dana ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the internet in years - Juno SpeedBand!
