Rarely have I disliked a band so much, only to find that they have the occasional gem. Guess that's why god invented eMusic. I keep double checking, but I still can't stand anything else he/they've done. And I hope that we can muster an original CD for Andrea. Not because I have any objection to making her a copy, but I think she deserves better. BTW, strong rumor has it that a reissue of LN is actually going to happen. I wonder if the person behind the strong rumor would like to elaborate now that he won't be the first person posting about this. - --dana ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the internet in years - Juno SpeedBand! My own passing GT info is less significant: Watch for the impending publication of a novel called "Liner Notes," in which a young woman takes a road trip and bonds with her mother via reminiscing over a mix-tape collection. The subject matter should already interest several people here. Having been asked to do a quick read on the manuscript, I'm also happy to note that a Game Theory song makes one of the tapes. It's even later singled out for special mention. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Apr 2003 09:56:50 -0400 From: "jer fairall" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Welcome Black (ns) > And I hope that we can muster an original CD > for Andrea. This from his fan website (in case you didn't already know this): added March 1st 2003, thanks to Steven Tallach: Belle and Sebastian Team Up With Trevor Horn The Scottish Indie Group will start recording their forthcoming album next week. Trevor will be producing the entire cd. It is due the next summer and will be released on the label Rough Trade. On their website, Belle and Sebastian described how they came to the conviction that Trevor should be their new producer. When he first visited them, he explained that he never used tape, and instead would always record directly into the computer. Of course the band, being a 'good' indie band was shocked! But then Trevor Horn said the following - quote from Stuart's diary at the Belle and Sebastian site: 'Think of it like this' he said. 'We had an outside toilet when I was a boy. I used to like going outside to use the toilet. You get very used to it. But I wouldn't have an outside toilet now.' And after he said that there was a moment of thoughtfulness and then you could see some of the care lifting from various member's faces. Myself included. And I think that's when we all threw our lot in with him. ________________________ I had no idea he produced Tatu nor that he'd worked with Leann Rimes and Faith Hill but I am so god damn excited to hear his work with Belle and Sebastian. If anyone can be of help in contacting him or his management company I'd appreciate it. Or a contact for ZTT records would help. Haven't heard it enough times to know if it's great, but it's easily good. Not a whole lot of guitars on it, but the emphasis is still mostly on melody with a touch of groove, rather than the reverse. There's some resemblance to recent Radiohead in the production, and there's a slight Bowie (circa Eno) influence too in places. I'm pretty pleased. Reading some of their English fans' opinions, it seems like a lot of people who were put off by 13 are digging Think Tank. I loved 13, so I can't comment. While listening to that, I'm finally finishing off the McSweeney's Mammoth Treasury of Thrilling Tales (which Shari stole from me initially). I don't think that it really achieves its aim, which is to drag the pulp genre story into the '00's, but there are at least 3-4 very solid stories, and only a couple that are really bad. Interestingly, every review I've read seems to agree on this point, but none seem to agree on *which* are the best efforts. IMHO, surprisingly enough, the winner is David Eggers' bit of non-cutesy Hemmingway-nia. Shari prefers Rick Moody's "The Albertine Notes" but she likes the cyberpunk stuff more than I do. At $13.95 (for the cheap version) it seems like a reasonably good deal. - --dana ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the internet in years - Juno SpeedBand! Halfway through, I'm voting for Nick Hornby's "Otherwise Pandemonium" so far, although Kelly Link's (who??) "Catskin" was really weird and interesting. And even though I find Stephen King really hit and miss to begin with, I was still surprised at how weak his "The Tale of Gray Dick" was. I can never remember her name when I'm actually in a bookstore or a library, but I've been meaning to check out Kelly Link ever since a friend of mine said she was like a young American Angela Carter. Given that I just freakin' *love* Angela Carter's take on the whole fantasy/horror/fairy tale genre, I'm intrigued. Not a bad description; I see a bit of Robert Aickman in her as well. I highly recommend STRANGER THINGS HAPPEN, and I think dmw will second me. ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V3 #120 *******************************
