The masochism in the picture is an obvious substitute for gay sex, which besides it's probably negative social connotation in the minds of the actors, is probably not shocking, exclusive, or intimate enough to meet their needs. In a way, Jackass may be for and about those homophobics who are really subconsciously gay. The manliest thing these eternal adolescents can do is taking the pain. >> Now, here's a great example of a douchebag Internet critic. There's never been anything slightly subtextual about the gayness of "Jackass." Those guys revel in it. In fact, they're often reveling in gayness as a triumph over boredom. And I'm sure the Jackass gang would find it hilarious that some cretin is musing over their film and thinking that he's eked out some kind of insight. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Apr 2003 12:07:33 -0400 From: "jer fairall" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] King Strut, lilys, Mac (ns) > Now, here's a great example of a douchebag > Internet critic. (or not) (and Scott) I'm also so bad at self-promotion that I'm still on digest, unable to keep up in a timely way with responses to my post. >> Can someone here burn me a copy? >> >> > Uh-oh... what sort of un-American comments does she make in it that you > suggest not only that we burn her book, but also an extra for you? This could work. I could have people order the book from Amazon so I could watch my sales ranking soar into the mid-to-low hundred thousands, but rather than reading the book, people could burn it in protest. Kind of like buying French wine in order to dump it out in protest... with the added advantage that people would be less likely to say negative things about the content of the book and might be more likely to make comments like, "Gee, that didn't burn so well," something over which I had no control. I can't imagine what I might write in the book that could spur that kind of protest, but then in "Fahrenheit 451" a book just being a book was enough to warrant burning. This form of burning certainly sounds more fun and recreational than, say, scanning the book into a computer, which might be the other form of burning. Ok, if people are really interested, the book is a wee sociological and historical case study called _Site and Sound: Understanding Independent Music Scenes_. The publisher is Peter Lang, Inc. in NY (www.peterlangusa.com). It's really expensive for a paperback -- $29.95 -- so if anyone really, really wants to read it, I'd suggest badgering your friendly neighborhood or university library to order it... although it is exciting to see that it's eligible for SuperSaver Shipping if pre-ordered through Amazon (but then, what isn't?) Also, while Amazon will tell you the book hasn't been released yet (not quite true), it will tell you: Customers interested in this title may also be interested in: Sponsored Links (What's this?) * Awesome Indie Bands Easy to find music you will love! Truly original, cutting-edge music SonicAwareness.com * somesongs we want to hear music (maybe yours?) somesongs.com * Napster's MP3 Music Burn & Play MP3 Music& Movies Now. Find any Song Now! No Monthly Fees. www.mp3downloadcenter.com Always helpful! That was enough self-promotion to last me a lifetime. And to make this on-topic for loud-fans, the book contains Scott content, but I don't think it's any kind of essential Scott content for Scott completists. The only way you can figure out that it's Scott content and not Sneetch content or Adam Schmitt content or something like that is by looking in the massive footnote section.
