I can't confirm, as I haven't ordered yet, but it shows up on allmusic and CDNOW as being available as of either February or April of this year. It doesn't appear to contain anything from the famous promotional disc, unfortunately. [His most recent solo album, which features some Slapp Happy covers, is up on eMusic.] Also, for NYC lilys fans, they're scheduled to play at CBGB's on Thursday April 24th. I got this from their notoriously unreliable website, so double check. The supporting bands look annoying. I know this will bore Andrew, but has *anyone* bought the new Fleetwood Mac album yet?? I keep reading that it's pretty great, but I'd love to hear from someone here before buyng. - --dana ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the internet in years - Juno SpeedBand! Has anybody been following Susan Sarandon's laughable claims of inside information that she made on the CBS "Morning Show" this past Friday? It reminds me of watching her explain to a polite Johnny Carson that she'd met a really excellent guru who only subsists on air. But remember that it's un-American to question a celebrity's beliefs. Instead, trust the informed writings of (occasionally) good > leftist > Joe Bob Briggs: > > This is, in fact, an interesting description of the movie that makes an apparently compelling argument that JRT's not joking when he calls the movie "feminist." I can't address the substance of Briggs' or Ebert's views of the movie, since I haven't actually seen it. But I'm not sure what the argument is here: Ebert seems to have called for a boycott of the movie, which in some definitions is censorship; this allegedly makes him hypocritical for condemning reactions against Susan Sarandon (and others) for anti-war statements. But Ebert's hypocrisy (posited) doesn't affect the truth status of his position: he's right, wrong, or some mixture of the two regarding whether Sarandon's being censored even if he himself is the reincarnation of Comstock. Actually, it's an interesting question: when does expressing an opinion about the undesirability of some speech (a movie, a political statement) turn into censorship or quasi-McCarthyism? I mean, surely anyone who thinks Ebert's a censorious boor for condemning _I Spit on Your Grave_ is free to not read him - and anyone who thinks Sarandon is a rennin-free cheese- eating surrender primate animal companion for her anti-war views is free to never masturbate to the _Rocky Horror Picture Show_ ever again. I'd be inclined to say that people, as individuals, can say whatever they want about it, and act for themselves however they want, and insofar as their actions do not prevent others from exercising similar freedoms, those actions aren't censorship. But once they do prevent others from exercising, say, their right to see a movie (by breaking into the theater and stealing the reels, say), then that crosses the line. So, radio stations not playing Dixie Chicks? Tough call - it's not as if they have an obligation to do so. However, if I were the DC's record company promo person, I'd think of suing for breach of contract: money's changed hands there! The Baseball Hall of Fame cancelling Tim Robbins' appearance? Well, it prevented people from seeing Robbins...but again, it's not as if they have some obligation (other than any contractual obligation that might exist) to present him. But in almost all cases, such attempts to suppress access, whether technically censorship or not, are stupid and counterproductive: many more people are aware of Robbins' views now because of the controversy; similarly (as someone pointed out) Ebert's bloviations against ISOYG primarily succeeded in making it a cult classic. (And I suspect there are not a few anti-war folks who thought, hey, I should check out these Dixie Chicks...and not a few pro-war folks who increased sales just so's they had something to burn at the rallies...). - --Jeff J e f f r e y N o r m a n The Architectural Dance Society http://www.uwm.edu/~jenor/ :: "Provoking an attack absolutely does NOT mean that the attack would have :: happened eventually otherwise. I will go on record as saying that any video with Neil Finn in it, at any stage of his life wearing any amount of make-up, is okay with me. He is, after all, the man I declared when I was in junior high school in the late 1970s that I would someday marry. In retrospect, this was quite a bold declaration, since it turns out that I have something of a personal allergy to that particular institution. (Neil, OTOH, apparently doesn't.) So great was my dedication that I even sat through "Solid Gold" to see Split Enz perform "I Got You." At least the Solid Gold dancers weren't involved in the performance in any way. On another Finn-related note, a couple of years ago a friend spent a year on sabbatical teaching at the University of Waikato. A friend that she made while there was a guy whose parents live next door (on the next farm?) to the Finn parents. A real brush with greatness. At the end of that academic year, the university awarded the Finn brothers honorary degrees, and it was quite the big deal for all parties involved. For those who have read this far, and keeping in mind that I am terrible at self-promotion (much to the dismay of my publisher and my series editors), I'll just briefly add that my book is finally out. Amazon doesn't believe it yet, but the publisher does. In true sibling fashion, when my sister got the copy that I sent her, she said told me over the phone, "Congratulations! I found a typo on the first page. Maybe I should proofread your next manuscript." Grrrr. These things are par for the course, as every person with a book out has reminded me (after seeing "San Franciso" in the index, I vowed not to look inside the book again.) My favorite example is in a book called _Rock Music_ by (then East) German pop music scholar Peter Wicke. In the index the name of Simon Frith - sociologist, music writer, and brother of Fred - is listed as "Fritz, Simon". Well, for fairly obvious reasons of gender, preferences and age bracket, I never reached that conclusion, but the entire Finn catalogue - Split Enz, Crowded House, and the solo projects - stands out in my mind as a remarkably enduring and important body of work. More personally, due to my interest in New Zealand, piqued originally by the reference to Te Awamutu in "Mean to Me," I spent six months in Dunedin in 1994. By this time, of course, I was more excited by the immediate proximity of the Chills and the Bats and the Verlaines, but I owe it all to the Finns originally. Michael n.p.
