Has anyone heard their more recent stuff? the live disc is from 86/88; it's nice, but not revelatory in the way that, say, some of freedy johnston's live bands were (the recording seems fair to the band, which i saw live on a few tours). covers include: young, embarrassment, dylan. i haven't listened to "lemmings" as much as "terminal," but i listened to "terminal" (the other recent album) *a lot.* lemmings and terminal are cut from similar cloth -- unfailingly melodic, well played, but, like their 80's output, mostly downtempo, and generally kinda morose -- seth tiven hasn't turned into a big ball of cheer in the intervening years. the instrumentation is a bit more expansive thn the old days, there's some keyboard and even a theremin on a track, but it's mostly not too intrusive. for half of the wherehouse price, i'd say it's a bargain. there's a record by a band called "log" called _auto fire life_ that's very dumptruck/feelies, and i like it a lot too. is anybody ever gonna reissue those records dumptruck cut for Big Time? i still wouldn't mind a CD of "d is for..." i can't be the only person who hears a lot of dumptruck in son volt, can i? - -- d. p.s. i think "altered beast" is a bargain at full price. np dumptruck "lemmings travel to the sea" ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Apr 2003 10:56:02 -0400 From: "Larry Tucker" Subject: RE: [loud-fans] Wherehouse, FAILER, Lucinda and her clones, etc. |-----Original Message----- |From: Bill Silvers [mailto:wsilvers@earthlink.net] |It's pretty impossible not to compare Ms. Edwards to Ms. |Williams on the |vocal similarities alone, though I'm not convinced they're especially |similar writers. I really don't see what Tift Merritt has to do with |Lucinda at all aside from gender, audience and their record |label. Bill |Friskics-Warren made the argument in the New York Times a week |ago Sunday |and I didn't buy it then, either (at: http://tinyurl.com/9ish |if you're |interested and registered). But YMMV. I've been following Tift for a while since she's from 'round these parts and have never really thought of her in the same context as Lucinda. I don't think her lyrics are near gritty enough. Early in her career, which would be about 3-4 years ago now, I thought she sounded a lot like Emmylou Harris. With her current sound and album she reminds me more of Bonnie Raitt. Among many of her fans BRAMBLE ROSE has been viewed upon with a fair amount of apprehension for it's glossing over of her more rootsy sound. |Oh, FWIW another gal with an alt.country pedigree (and little |otherwise to |do with Lucinda Williams) has an excellent new record coming out |tomorrow. Be on the lookout for Caitlin Cary's I'M STAYING |OUT, an even |better record than last year's fine full-length debut and one |that likely |will be on some year-end list of mine somewhere. Though Tift seems to be getting the most attention, Caitlin for my money is the most talented of the two to come out of this area and should be getting a lot more attention. Maybe the new one will do that for her. I suspect that a component in the "selling" factor is that Tift is more pleasing to the eye and thus, for good or bad, easier to market. And they made the delish Megan Mullally have a fling with him on WILL AND GRACE -- yuck. * Fred Willard: Never funny, yet he's still everywhere -- Amy's square religious dad on EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND, and he's going to be on the revamped WATCHING ELLIE that launches tonight. Yeah, that'll fix WATCHING ELLIE, sure, sure. * On RAYMOND, the person they chose for the other parent of Amy is never-funny Georgia Engel, whose Gracie-Allen-lite act was worst thing ever to happen to THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW. While I'm not sure that MARY TYLER MOORE ever quite jumped the shark, Georgia Engel had the show holding on to the shark's dorsal fin for dear life. And while Willard and Engel aren't quite household names, putting them on RAYMOND is distressingly close to just the sort of stunt casting the show has largely avoided until this point. Plus have I said that they aren't funny? * Julia Louis-Dreyfus: Always funny, always gorgeous, but as long as she insists on doing a show created and helmed by her never-funny husband, Brad Hall, she ain't gonna be in a good show again. Anyone who thinks that WATCHING ELLIE didn't succeed the first time because of the "real-time" concept or because it needed a Recognizable Old Comedy Hand (Willard) missed the point -- it wasn't the concept or the cast (Julia, Lauren Bowles, and THE DAILY SHOW's Steve Carell are usually excellent) the was killing the show, it was the *writing.* I'll bet they didn't bother to fix *that* problem. * Watched my first CSI of any flavor last night: CSI: MIAMI, as it ended up, just to leer at guest star Rena Sofer. Maybe this episode wasn't representative of the CSI franchise, but I found it to be even less of a show than LAW & ORDER. The latter show I don't care much about because of its uninvolving clinical approach, but this CSI: MIAMI not only co-opted that approach but added a lot of moralizing (the school shooting plot) and Stock Cop Drama Plot #7 (the Sofer plot, where a sexy mistress kills her boyfriend, then uses her feminine wiles in an attempt to beguile the male investigators). Plus CSI seems to have taken the "gore!" cue from E.R., so they give you "bullet-rips-through-body" effects demonstrating what the investigators are explaining, as though hearing the detailed description itself is insufficient. I mean, I get the utility of "showing" how some of the forensic evidence got where it did on a show that's focused on process, but I think I can get my brain around "exit wound" without graphic assistance, thanks. All of this was enough to make me long for L&O's rote, uninvolving minimalism. At least Rena Sofer looked positively edible. * Not a complaint, but a fine moment on VH-1 Classic's request show last night, where they played these three videos in sequence: - a Van Halen-alike group, down to the outfits and hairstyles - a Guns 'n' Roses-alike group, down to the outfits and hairstyles, including a guy wearing Slash's *hat*, for cryin' out loud - a Rush/Styx-alike group (not that I think Rush and Styx are alike, but this group seemed bent on being both at once) down to the outfits and hairstyles The sequence was so brilliant that it almost made the videos themselves watchable. Sadly, there was probably some mulleted couple in their late 30s somewhere who were delighted by this sequence in a wholly unironic way. * Not a complaint or, in the case of the band, a true celeb, but... anyone else think that Conan O'Brien should do a parody of that Cock Robin (there's one of the all-time worst band names, though it would be a better porn star name) video they always show on VH-1 Classic? The singer actually looks and moves like Conan, and I think Conan could play all the band members except for the foxy Latina who may or may not be in the band (she's at a keyboard for part of it, but for most of the video, she's the Obligatory Object of Desire). Only about ten people watching Conan would get it, but us ten people would be falling off the couch if he did. later, Miles ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Apr 2003 15:42:31 -0600 From: "Roger Winston" Subject: [loud-fans] online CD retailers? My dear Amy says that the original CSI brand is considerably better than the (comparatively humorless, flavorless) Miami spin-off, but I can verify only that Miami is not a great show, at least from the several early-season ep's I made myself try to get into to no avail.
