Target's been doing an excellent job over the last five years or so of positioning itself -- through its product mix and some really quite good advertising featuring some truly outstanding graphic design -- as the higher-end alternative to the much more mass-market and discounty likes of Wal-Mart or KMart. (Actually, from the very beginning, Target has gone for a slightly more upmarket demographic than the average discount store, it's only in the last few years that they've been pressing the point.) It's a smart move, corporate-policy-wise. And the Suburbs never struck me as guys who would consider selling a song for a commercial to be tainting their art, maaaaaaan. Didn't they break up because Beej Chaney married an heiress and never had to work again? What I love are the cruise ship ads that use "Lust For Life." So does that mean you can actually score smack on the boats? Convenient! The first track was great. Since then it's been hit or miss. Definitely worth the download, though. Actually, that first track ("Xerox 265DC") seems to be available for general consumption at www.mp3.com/xerophonics. Now I'm trying to figure out whether my little boombox will get stolen if I put it in the copy room with this disc on repeat all night. On a less intentionally vexing note, I got the Daniel Johnston/Mark Linkous album today, and it definitely seems like one of those collaborations you have to like both creators to have a chance of wanting to hear. I bought it only for the Mark Linkous connection, and it's not like he's not *there*, only that Johnston's creepy incompetence overwhelms the record for me, just as I'm sure some of Johnston's fans will feel like Linkous punctured the magical air of the songwriting. Or something. a ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Mar 2003 16:54:21 -0600 From: Chris Prew Subject: Re: [loud-fans] emusic irritainment alert I grabbed this too, and I find it fascinating and entertaining in a "I'm not sure I ever want to listen to this again but right this minute its pretty cool" way. If you are one of those that grooves to rhythmic, everyday sounds like that, this is at least worth a listen. If you even play the free 30 second samples at emusic.com you'll get a pretty good idea of what the deal is. Unfortunately, they didn't include any copier vocals that can be easily sampled in any copier room.... "Why doesn't this f*cking thing ever work?" "OK, who interrupted my job?" As it happens, for work, I've started working on a project for ASCAP, and I've billed a couple of hours today going through the ASCAP website, re-learning how everything works. To wit, I got paid to find an answer to this question. Nearly all the money you get will come from the synch rights, and these can vary dramatically depending on how popular the song is. Here's some info: http://www.ascap.com/musicbiz/money-commercials.html This article says "from $125,000 to more than $750,000 per year for successful songs." I would imagine that Luna or The Burbs would be below even the low end here. They will get a little bit of money through ASCAP from the performance rights, but only a little. Commercials account for less than 1% of the performance credits generated across all television. 1% divided by all commercials with ASCAP music equals diddly squat. I would imagine that Luna or The Burbs would be below >even the low end here. That's still more than they make from album sales in almost all cases. I interviewed Robert Schneider of the Apples In Stereo shortly after their song "Shine A Light" appeared in a JC Penney ad, and he said that gave him more money than he'd made in his entire life. This is exactly why I refuse to get bent out of shape when my favorite songs appear in TV commercials: it means that for once, an artist I admire got paid. Of course, when Mylanta starts using the Queers' "I Can't Stop Farting" in a commercial, I might raise an eyebrow.
