It won't make him any new fans (unless there were really people who were put off Pavement by "lack of musicianship", which I never quite bought) but I imagine that many people, like me, who were sort of sleep-shopping through the final Pavement album and first solo record will wake up and be excited about it. Available on eMusic, too! (Albeit without the very worthwhile five-song EP that it comes with in stores for now -- I think pitchforkmedia.com said that would be sold separately in a month, for eMusic-having and parsimonious completists.) Meanwhile... someone here mentioned that Chris Butler of the Waitresses had a whole solo career. I looked on the web, and it seems interesting, though the vocals on the demo mp3s he's posted remind that songwriting wasn't *all* the Waitresses had going for them... Anyway, suggestions about what to buy from him? I admit that I'm a tiny bit hesitant because his idiosyncracies remind me faintly of Bill Nelson, who sounded really intriguing until I heard his music. a ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Mar 2003 12:52:00 EST From: JRT456@aol.com Subject: Re: [loud-fans] lib, butling In a message dated 3/20/03 9:37:44 AM, aaron@eecs.harvard.edu writes: << Anyway, suggestions about what to buy from him? The Tin Huey album, incidentally, was recently reissued on Collectors' Choice. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Mar 2003 13:10:30 -0500 From: Stewart Mason Subject: Re: [loud-fans] lib, butling At 12:35 PM 3/20/2003 -0500, Aaron Mandel wrote: >Meanwhile... someone here mentioned that Chris Butler of the Waitresses >had a whole solo career. I strongly strongly STRONGLY recommend THE DEVIL GLITCH, his mildly famous 69-minute song with no instrumental sections or repeated verses. It's actually something I pull out and play on a regular basis. Otherwise, I really liked both I FEEL A BIT NORMAL TODAY and THE MUSEUM OF ME VOLUME 1, which collects a lot of his uncompleted ideas like the "Wilderness Years" series of historical recording technology. There's also a "new" Tin Huey record called DISINFORMATION that I'm a big fan of, which includes an early version of the Waitresses' "Wise Up." I've never figured out why Bill chose to put a lot of the tracks on a two disc retrospective released by DGM (although it might have been because of ownership rights).
