I taped it |and watched it earlier this evening - thought it was pretty |good, although a bit surreal at first. When Paul Shaffer's |band was blasting away at "Alison" before the commercial |break, I found myself thinking, "and what would the Elvis who |recorded _This Year's Model_ think of that?" It felt a bit |rough when he began interviewing (Kim Cattrall) but he seemed |to get into more of a groove later. | |And the version of "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace Love & |Understanding" rocked pretty hard - at least, as far as I |could tell on my tinny TV speakers. Uh, anyone have an mp3 of it? Missed that show, but "...Peace, Love & Understanding" seems to be the cover of choice in these turbulent times. In the past month few weeks I've seen it covered twice as an encore, first by Steve Earle and then this past Monday night by Yo La Tengo. But, I have to admit that I'm bidding more out of curiosity than out of the expectation that it's something that I'll actually love. If anyone on list is planning on going after it and wants to discuss game theory, feel free to email off list. I keep wondering if the person who's bidding against me, sexmoneybeer, is a loud-fan. Why do I keep thinking that it's Brianna :) - --dana ________________________________________________________________ Sign Up for Juno Platinum Internet Access Today Only $9.95 per month! I don't know, it's pretty lovable -- at least, if you liked the early GT records but wouldn't have minded them being a little weirder. The only bum song, in my opinion, is the title track, and even that is at least interesting as the beginning of Scott's thing about windows... in "Painted Windows" the Windows are shutting people out; ten years later in "Throwing The Election" there's a light on in someone else's window showing that it's her sanctuary, even if the narrator is bummed out about not being invited in; ten years after that, "No One's Watching My Limo Ride" has a guy cozy behind his own dark windows. (Is she even onlist anymore? If not, why not?) Andy Europeans have always looked at America with a mixture of fascination and puzzlement, and now, increasingly, disbelief. How is it that a country that prides itself on its economic success could have so many very poor people? How is it that a country so insistent on the rule of law should seek to exempt itself from international agreements? And how is it that the world's beacon of democracy can have elections dominated by wealthy special interest groups? For me, the question has become: "How can a country that has produced so much cultural and economic wealth act so dumb?" - --Brian Eno, from a "Viewpoint" essay published in the European (and oddly enough, not the American) edition of "Time," at http://www.time.com/time/europe/magazine/2003/0120/cover/view_eno.html .
