[Gil Ray Subject: [loud-fans] LN Side 3, or is that filler in your pocket..... ..or are you just happy to see me?! Side 3, side 3, side 3....Wow, this is actually gonna be fun. While I do not think of this side as filler, it most definitely is the least played side three, in Scott Miller's catalog, and I'm pretty sure many folks plain wore out the "skip" button if the cd was what they had. We have another Donny song, a Shelley song and a Gil song. Lots of sound snippets and 3 very groovy Scott songs. I'm not man enough to review the snippets, but as a whole, I think they're pretty cool. Damn ballsy of Scott for being so self-referential. Critics seemed to have been perplexed by this, but I'm sure they were all part of Scott's vision. (hell, I was a tad squeemish posing in front of those giant blown up photos of OURSELVES on Big Shot...).I also bet that he and Mitch had a great time chopping and splicing all that stuff together. (way before digital editing..I remember many instances when Mitch would slice away with a razor on some of our tape!) He was EXPERT at that.Screw you, Pro-Tools! Where They Have To Let You In - A Gil song! Actually, Scott asked if we had anything to offer. I don't know if he felt bad that he let Donny do 2 songs, or if he just needed more notes to fill out the record. I think it was probably a little of both. I had 2 parts floating around, he stuck 'em together and off we go! I was excited because I got to play electric guitar, without having to hit it with a stick. Scott doubled the part. And I'm getting a little tiny inkling of a thought that Michael Quercio MAY have played bass. Not sure about that , though. Straight ahead drum sound. The title was not my idea. For some reason Donnette got to title my song! My idea was "Wheelbarrow Waltz", which refered to our soundman's favorite sexual position. Oddly enough, Mitch and Scott added a wheelbarrow type sound at the end of the song. Cool. Mammoth Gardens - Lots of people hated this one, but aside from the "we can dance dance dance" stuff, I think it's a pretty cool rocker. Nuff said. Little Ivory - Remember back on side 2 that I said "Andy In Ten Years" took a million takes? Well, this was the opposite. It was the very first song we recorded and we nailed the mofo on the FIRST TAKE! In 5/4 and we nailed it! Drums are a little processed, but I guess it works out ok. Cool Scott lead break. Have I told you what a great guitarist I think he is? I love the ending of this song. Very cool. Toby Ornette - Shelley! Robert, maybe you can confirm that Donny got to name this one too? Didn't Shelley want to call it "Big ol' Dick" ? ;-) I love this song! It gets stuck in my head all the time! It's an interesting one in that I believe it may be the ONLY GT or LF song that Scott does not play anything on. Donny does some great surf guitar stuff, and Robert is going to town on the bass. No Gui either. Someday I'll get Shelley,Robert,Donny and myself and tour under the name Game Theory. As far as the drums go, during the kind of loopy drunken part, I was thinking Kurt Weill by way of the Alabama Song via the Doors, all the way. Works out great with the very cool Robert bass part. One More For Saint Michael - Lots of percussion going on. This song builds beautifully. What's that I hear? Another stellar Gil Ray triangle part?! I think so! (God, do I put one on EVERY album?) "God only knows how many holes he's been in" What!?!? Scott is firmly in the Captains chair here, taking us at warp speed, wanting us to tell Jim....something. Scott is throwing down mighty rap that's off the hook. Choose Between Two Sons - To pay us back for not inviting him to play on Shelley's song, here's one he didn't invite us to play on. I'm pretty sure Mitch is drumming and doing a rave-up job. Sound like Utopia to me. The different drum sound blasts off. Hey! How come my drums weren't mixed that loud! Thanks again for puttin' up with this. Side 4 on the way! Gil Yahoo!
