I heard a track from the new one (GIRAFFE) called "Good on TV" on the radio this morning and really liked it. Catchy, rocking, lots of guitars, buried vocals that sounded female but probably weren't. Never heard anything from them before. They also played a track from an older album that was instrumental and noisy, and which didn't do as much for me. I hear they've been compared to Krautrock... I've spun the Kathleen Edwards record several times and like it better with almost every spinning, though it still seems mysterious, and I'm hesitant to look up the lyrics figuring what I think she's singing might be more interesting that what she's probably actually singing. The Best Album of 2003 So Far is the first one I bought in 2003 (wee small hours of 1/1/03 at the Tennessee Theatre at the "Hank's Last Night Show"), KNOXVILLE TELLS, by Todd Steed and the Sons of Phere. It's rockin', poignant, and hilarious, often within the same line of a song. Only possible drawback is that the album is sooooo specific in its Knoxville references that it might not have an audience past the Tennessee border, if not past the nine-county Knoxville MSA. Nevertheless, I believe there's a wider world out there who would enjoy "Peyton Manning Shirt," "TennCare Buzz," and "The Sounds of This Town," even if they've never been to the East Towne Mall or been subjected to ubiquitous Vols "culture." On New Year's Eve, Mr. Steed and his regular band, Apelife, nearly stole the show from the headliner, one A. Scott Miller. Those of you who still follow my adventures will know what high praise I am issuing here. http://www.apeville.com for more Steed information than you'll ever need. later, Miles ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Feb 2003 14:56:59 -0600 From: Miles Goosens Subject: Re: [loud-fans] NS At 02:52 PM 2/18/2003 -0500, Max Germer wrote: >> if proclaiming a record the greatest of a year that's only seven weeks >> old doesn't seem like much of an endorsement > >The new Fountains Of Wayne record will be the best of the year, hands-down. >I give you my word. As far as covers go, though, it was great to hear Bradley do Morrissey's "Why Don't You Find Out for Yourself" which remains my favorite Morrissey solo song by a wide margin. I liked Garden Abstract, but I've revisited it since seeing the show, and I'm liking it even more. The song they co-wrote with Scott was also really good, and I'll be excited to hear the studio version should such ever appear. I also really liked Statuesque's Live from Lake Vostok (it made my year-end list), although I was less thrilled with seeing him live. He sings so much at the top of register, and I felt like his voice sometimes felt tired relative to the recorded versions. And, to echo Jeff's experience, I dropped $20 U.S. cash into the mail, and he sent back both Vostok and Arbiter's Anonymous. - --Michael ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Feb 2003 18:05:09 -0500 From: "jer fairall" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] NS > new Fountains Of Wayne... That would save Dana the trouble of appending "(ns)" to the end of his posts. I caught Fountains of Wayne on their recent mini-tour road testing their new material, and unless they really screw up the performances or recordings, their new album should be near the top of my list for 2003. My top two so far for this year are the two albums I downloaded today from eMusic, the Go-Betweens BRIGHT YELLOW BRIGHT ORANGE and HEARTS OF OAK by Ted Leo and the Pharmacists. I still haven't bought any physical CDs this year. I enjoyed the CVB box set because I didn't have any of those albums on CD, but I'm even more convinced now that their two Virgin albums are miles ahead of the first three, better songs, better playing, better everything. They took a lot of crud from indie hipsters back in the day for signing with a major label, but it made them smarten up and stop being so damn lazy. On the box set, I'm enjoying the live CD most of all, because I thought the Morgan Fichter/David Immergluck version of CVB from the final tour was a lot better than the original band, and the live versions of the later songs (like "Her Favorite Fruit") may even be better than the studio versions. I will say that these "live" tracks sound a little studio-enhanced though! I'll bet Victor's Macintosh (and his ProTools) got even more of a workout putting this live CD together last year than they did on CVB's song-by-song cover of TUSK. Hearts Of Oak has some tracks that just blew me away on first listen, and which have continued to do so, but about half of it hasn't really grown on me. I went back and listened to his previous album (already downloaded from eMusic, happily) but didn't hear the rhythmic pulse I loved on the middle of Hearts Of Oak (tracks 4-6... I don't have the CD near me). a ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V3 #51 ******************************
