Gee, all they asked me to do was write about useless rock bands. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Jan 2003 10:04:13 -0800 From: "Michael Zwirn" Subject: [loud-fans] stolen computer / MP3s Folks: My computer was stolen last week, which means that anyone expecting a mix tape from me is probably SOL, and additionally that I've lost all my MP3s. Would anyone be willing to burn me a CD of the various Game Theory/Loud Family mp3s from loudfamily.com? I know Sue doesn't have server space to leave them all up at a time, and otherwise I fear that I'll never get them back. Additionally, my Collected Works of glenn mcdonald are now gone, but I guess I can go back and get them for myself when I figure out what computer I'm getting to replace my Pismo. - ------ Michael Zwirn, Policy Analyst The Wild Salmon Center mzwirn@wildsalmoncenter.org http://wildsalmoncenter.org (t) 503-222-1804 (f) 503-222-1805 (c) 503-887-9800 ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Jan 2003 15:02:35 -0500 From: "Paul Seeman" Subject: RE: [loud-fans] things gleaned from other things > Naked crassness - ethics to make Ken Starr look good: > http://www.nyrock.com/streetbeat/default.asp#review You've got this all wrong. Any lousy band can send its stuff out to be reviewed, but the Market in its wisdom holds that only the best are willing to take that extra leap and pay for the privilege. And look at the results: in the latest issue of Street Beat, there's not a clunker in the lot. Topping the list are "a stunner" and "a real stunning disc" (remember, they've got top-notch writers); the rest range from "a sparkling debut" to "very refreshing" to "a diamond in the rough". The lone metal band on the list even gets a Kerrang-esque notice: "more punches and kicks than a kung fu movie." Sure, the cynics out there might call this a blurb mill whose writing occasionally resembles the most remedial reviews in Punk Planet's back pages, but I call it capitalism in action. Stand up, sit down, fight, fight, fight! Anyways, just noticed that Godz 2 is on the site, so anyone who wants to hear the song "Permanent Green Light" without actually spending money on a pretty crummy album now has the chance. The new eMusic Sonic Youth item is kind of a disappointment though: just a single. I'm still hoping that "Walls Have Ears" will turn up eventually. And I think (after giving it a second chance via the iPod) that I may have underrated Cha Cha Cohen's album that came out last year "All Artists Are Criminals." Mojo has given it a plug, and on second thought so do I. Kind of like a mix of Soul Coughing (but with a stiffer rhythm section) and the Fall (but with a female Mark Smith). Over the course of the full album, it's a little wearing, but song by song I'm liking it much. Import only, but I'm sure there are cheap copies to be had at half.com or thereabouts. - --dana ________________________________________________________________ Sign Up for Juno Platinum Internet Access Today Only $9.95 per month!
