The influence I heard on this track (not the album as a whole, though) was, erm, Adam and the Ants (check the yodeling in the chorus -- straight out of "Antmusic".) -d.w. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Jan 2003 11:10:28 -0800 (PST) From: Stef Hurts Subject: Re: [loud-fans] testing Roger Winston wrote: > Please ignore... Well, Stacey put a lock on the liquor cabinet, but I'm sure I'll be able to break in soon....Yes, Michael was kind enough to ask for a little Mitch blurb, and he seemed to like it (nothing juicy, mind you, just a wee paragraph or two about recording with the mix-master). It does make a nice change to have some good British albums to get excited about, though! 1. Daryll-Ann, TRAILER TALES. I know I've gone on about this already this year and said its not as good as WEEPS, but it's still better than anything else this year. Tuneful, thoughtful and at times achingly beautiful. 2. Grand Drive, SEE THE MORNING IN. More soul than the pure alt.country that got them tagged as the British Jayhawks. The fabulous melodies and harmonies are still much in evidence though. 3. Wilco, YANKEE HOTEL FOXTROT. A fabulous sounding album, though I can see why Jay Bennett would have got fed up without numerous opportunities to showcase his many talents - team-player apparently not being one of them! I agree with the guy from alt-countrytab.com who said that 'Jesus etc' was the essential track. 4. Electric Soft Parade, HOLES IN THE WALL. Take 2 precocious brothers in a Brighton bedroom, let them play all the instruments and you get one of the best debut albums by a British band in a few years. Wide ranging in styles, but always heavily laden with hooks and singalong choruses. Played a great set at Leeds too. 100 times better than the overhyped Vines. 5. The Church, AFTER EVERYTHING NOW THIS. As many reviews said, it is a typical later period Church album. It has few surprises, possibly Chromium being so reminiscent of the Afghan Whigs - to me anyway - was the only real one. Doesn't stop it being a work of skill and beauty though. 6. Aimee Mann, LOST IN SPACE. Obviously, I didn't have problems with the tempo as some did here. Invisible Ink has to be one of the best songs she has ever written, in fact at the moment I can't think of a better one. 7. Groundswell, COSMPOLITAN. I started buying from this dealer/label owner from Melbourne after winning one of his eBay auctions last summer and he was connected with this lot. At times a cross between Kinks-style Britishness and powerpop. Great melodies here too. 8. Nada Surf, LET GO. From the sound of the acoustic guitar on the intro to Blizzard of '77 you know you are in safe hands here. Just packed to the gills with powerpop gems. 9. The Coral, S/T. Got into them after hearing Dreaming of You, 2 1/2 minutes of beaty pop with ska influences. the rest of the album has echoes of all the classic 60s bands, but plenty of their own inclinations and combinations to keep it injteresting and not an exercise in barrel-scraping. Great tunes. 10. Idlewild, THE REMOTE PART. 2 fabulous tracks that would make any best of year compilation (you held the world in your arms & stay the same) and Roddy Woomble's fascinating turns of phrase are what keep mecoming back to this one. When I get there I'm always pleasantly surprised by all the subtle treasure I'd forgotten about. 11. Brendab Benson, LAPALCO. As i said last week I had to rediscover this one as I'd marked it in the OK bin after a few listens. By next year it may well be higher on a list of faves among these albums. 12. Pearl Jam, RIOT ACT. Another late-in-the-year album. Not one I'm in a great hurry to put on all the time, but if I do I'm always blown away by the sequence of Love Boat Captain/Cropduster/Ghost/I am Mine, some of the best Pearl Jam songs in years. Dips a bit two-thirds of the way through before finishing strongly, from Bushleaguer onwards. 13. Wondermints, MIND IF WE MAKE LOVE TO YOU. Another beautiful sounding album, with a few fabulous songs, especially If I Were You, but its a definite dip after their s/t album and BALI. 14. The Breeders, TITLE TK. Laid back, in no big hurry to get anywhere, but well worth the wait. they also played my favourite set of the summer at Leeds. Showed all the arrogant kids how to work an audience and put on a memorable show. 15. The Chevelles, GIRL GOD. More power in this version of Aussie powerpop. Bits of Redd Kross production too. Some great singalong pop and driving guitars. Not heavy on subtlety, but some fine harmonies. Honourable mentions; Flaming Lips, YOSHIMI - the most amazing sounding album I heard last year McAlmont & Butler, BRING IT BACK - speaking of amazing sounding. Still a bit like a few singles and bits of filler though Cracker, FOREVER - a bit similar here In many ways a good year, I had real difficulty putting these in any sort of order after the first 3, but even my top 3 weren't absolutely fabulous. Still, many of these can lighten the darkest mood, which is always a good sign, even if it is only temporary!
