More albums in both formats are being released all the time. >Just wondering if they're worth it... Well-mixed surround on a properly set up surround system is dramatically better than stereo. Otherwise, the improvement is incremental at best. When I bought a DVD player three years or so ago, I got one with DVD-A so that I'd be "futureproof" (waiting until there was a blowout at Best Buy so that I didn't have to spend any extra). When I bought the player, I bought one DVD-A: BUENA VISTA MUSIC CLUB, the most interesting of the ten or so titles that were available at that time. It sounds great, but I suspect it sounds great on CD too. The video, as JRT points out, is rudimentary, but I'm pretty sure that's a limitation of DVD-A rather than a temporary artistic malaise. Slide shows are all the format allows. I don't have to play the songs track by track, though. Since I don't have a surround system, the only way I would buy another DVD-A is if (1) I knew I would like it enough to care about spending the extra dosh for a slight sound quality improvement and (b) I knew that I wouldn't mind not being able to play it in the car. So far, these conditions have not been met. An upgrade for VESPERTINE keeps tempting me, but so far I've always decided to spend the money on something I don't own already. It's worth noting that plain old DVD can also do hi-res stereo and decent surround. More and more titles are coming out in this format (aka "DVD-Music"), and my current hunch is that it's the most likely of the three to go mainstream. Here's a fairly accurate, if slightly dated, comparison of the two formats: http://www.audiorevolution.com/equip/dvdavssacd/ Here's a rather technical discussion of some flaws inherent in SACD (short version: it dumps loads of ultrasonic noise into your tweeters). I'm starting to believe that Sony introduced it just to have something they could control and make royalties from. The fact that very few SACD titles are in surround only adds to the pointlessness. http://sound.westhost.com/cd-sacd-dvda.htm There is one advantage to SACD, though: for technical reasons, you can't squash the signal to death for overbearing volume purposes, as has become so common on CD. - -- Free Exquisite Music : The Doubtful Palace : http://www.doubtfulpalace.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Jan 2003 14:29:18 -0600 From: Miles Goosens Subject: Re: Re: [loud-fans] Ed At 01:13 AM 1/23/2003 -0500, Stewart Mason wrote: >Yeesh. I downloaded this while I was off running errands at the bank and the Asian supermarket this afternoon. Three songs in, this sounds like the great lost new wave album of 1981. Four songs in, I do find myself wishing the keyboard player would find another setting on his synth, but otherwise, this is a winner for anyone who finds themselves watching VH1 Classic (just maybe the best cable channel EVER!) way more than they should. Charity and I hear more B-52s than Blondie, though, and I bet that compression hiss is on the masters, not an artifact of the mp3 process. However, is the opener, "Need More Time," a cover? I swear I've heard this before. Maybe they've just played it on WMBR or something. Coincidentally, eMusic also has the brand-new EP by Vancouver's The Cinch, which I cannot recommend more highly. It's basically the same mix of components as the Strokes: a lot of late VU, a little Modern Lovers (they cover "She Cracked" -- quite well!), some Dolls, some MARQUEE MOON. But Jennifer Smyth's vocals don't have that whiff of arrogance that Julian Casablacas does, and they sound more punky-spunky than glammy-cool. I like it. Lots and lots. Advice: If someone offers you money to be part of a marketing research focus group, do it. There's a chance that, like me, you won't even have to participate, since they routinely over-recruit and pay you just for showing up, even if they don't use you. Anyway, the length of the drive to the research center turned out to be exactly the length of the Steely Dan album KATY LIED, which I listened to on the way. Okay, it's a decent album, but I don't really understand how someone can rank it #1 ever. It's not even my favorite Steely Dan album - I still prefer THE ROYAL SCAM or COUNTDOWN TO ECSTASY. There were a couple of things I noticed though: It's a shorter line between mid-period Steely Dan and Game Theory than I thought. Some lyrics, some vocal inflections, even some melodies and chord changes, reminded me of the kind of thing Scott does. And as far as I know, Steely Dan and the Loud Family are the only two acts to ever use the word "retsina" in a song. (My spell-checker wants to change that to "retina", BTW.) Even on my car stereo, the production was awesome. I never realized how much I missed that sort of crystalline you-can-pick-out-every-individual-instrument mix that is sorely lacking in today's music. "Wow, I can actually hear the stereo separation in my car!" Texture. There was just so much texture to the sound. Even though I could pick out each instrument, they all still blended together so well. My God, I'm getting nostalgic for 70s music. Someone slap me around, please. Well, thanks for asking and thanks for the compliment! You asked for it (sorta), so I just got liquored up and gave it a spin and now you must indulge me. Twice. Room For One More- Best triangle part I ever recorded. I put triangle on lots of songs. Really helped establish us a power to be reckoned with. A really great song, with excellent Scott and Donny vocals. Imagine Scott in Vietnam. What The Whole World Wants-Think we sorta learned this one as we recorded it. Picture Of Agreeability- Agreeability does not look like it should be spelled that way. Probably my most subtle drumming. Amelia Have You Lost-quintessential Scott chord progression. Quintessential Gil drum track wishing we could get to the next song. Rolling With The Moody Girls-'nother Scott progression but with a damned saxophone!I can't hear it today without visualizing Lisa Simpson. Thank god it was not a trumpet. Or a trombone. As I was recording this I was hoping this would be a hit so we could have more time recording the next record. Wyoming-Best Galloping Drums of 1988. No one gallops like Gil Ray gallops. Best vocal contribution Donnette made to GT.I think Rob Poor played bass on this. I think he also bent Scott's ear into dumping us and getting a real band. ;) In A Delorean-Damn snappy drums here.Gui could sing really well when he was sober.Makes me want a line of coke. You Drive-first experience with midi and a click track. My days with a disco band in the '70's really helped me here. I think my future tempo problems were born from the loins of this song. Leilani- my favorite drum track on the record.Best tambourine of'88. Tom tom part was a direct result of me listening to too many Jethro Tull albums.Big fat drums from little skinny kit.Very inspired leslie-driven guitar part. Think Blind Faith. Wish I Could Stand Or Have-more Tull influence here as far as the drums go.I remember Mitch being impressed that I could sing the recorder parts. Yep. Lotsa early Tull here. Don't Entertain Me Twice-Damn. Pretty darn rockin' drums here. I was hitting the holy crap out of 'em. I think this was Steve Kilbey's favorite GT song. Cool maraca part. Shelley rocks out. Throwing The Election-it took Scott,Donny and Shelley to play the very cool organ part. One of my favorite Scott songs. There are some drumming fuck ups here! We didn't know the damn song! Initiations Week-falsetto from Mars.Dogs can hear this song from 30 miles out. Thank you all for letting me blab. Over all this is a pretty good record.
