Shari and I, and everyone else with any sense, are staying in and watching DVDs. Earlier we watched "My Big Fat Greek Wedding." Lets just say that it's very distressing that *this* is the film that got the incredible word of mouth while, say, "Spirited Away" was a *critic's favorite*. What a horrible country we live in. Luckily, it's a country that has a very good Sushi place not far from us, and that's exactly where I went for take out. On the way, I put on this Semisonic EP that I downloaded off of emusic last night, sort of as an afterthought. I loved "All About Chemistry" but that "Closing Time" song had kind of scared me off of their back catalog. The ep is "The Pleasure ep" and I think that it's their first release. So the ep starts up (on the iPod, of course) and first song's good, second song's good and then...oh my god!! Third song is called "Wishing Well" and it starts out like a more harmonically complex "Dream On" [the Aerosmith song]. Then slowly shifts into the style of, say, "I'm Going Home" from the Rocky Horror Picture Show. You know, somewhat dramatic, theatrical rock and roll, bring out your lighter, etc. It's all very nice, and suddenly the guitars and drums kick in, and the thing starts building and building until...kablam!! It's like a great lost Queen song, with theatrical backing vocals, zooming guitar and everything but the kitchen sink. There follows a great rocking bridge, a huge noisy guitar solo, more gloriously bombastic chorus, and finally a quiet melodic ending. I just listened to this song about fifteen times in a row (on the way to sushi, while waiting for sushi, on the way back from sushi). Ok, maybe "Wishing Well" and I were having a moment and it won't translate. Maybe it was the headphones and the full moon and the freezing temperature and thoughts of sushi to come. Still, I haven't had my socks knocked off like this in a while, and it was a nice surprise. It's available for download at eMusic (or for sale at the Semisonic website). Wow. - --dana ________________________________________________________________ Sign Up for Juno Platinum Internet Access Today Only $9.95 per month!
