I personally thought that 2002 was the best year for albums since '99. It all comes down to what you heard. There are, what, 25,000 albums released every year (and I'm not even counting all the self-released CDR stuff, which would probably double or triple or quadruple that number)? Even the most voracious listener [Hi Glenn! :) ] probably only gets to hear a few hundred in any given year. It's the old "blind men fondling an elephant" issue. -d.w. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Jan 2003 11:51:36 -0500 From: Carolyn Dorsey Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Matt Pond PA (ns) I forgot to put a ;) after my question to John! Her sheer filthiness is sometimes funny, though, and the music's not bad. It was semi-unplugged: Paula on clean, electric rhythm, acoustic 6- and 12- string lead guitar, electric bass, and hand percussion. Although I also love her monsta rock side, I think this was an ideal musical setting to highlight her amazing lyrics, sophisticated melodic inventions, and distinctive voice. Her vocals last night, especially, were the best I've ever heard. > Mr. Sharples returns to Paula's band on - what were they, John, > congas? Congas that were hand-made (with real, sheepskin heads!) for Paula's husband, who as you know is a Brazilian music expert. I was also playing some sort of polished wooden box with tuned wood phalanges, that I discovered at the guitarist's studio. Sounds a bit like a marimba. It fits her quieter numbers real well, I think. Either albums are generally weaker now, or it's getting harder for me to find the music I like. Either way, bad for me. Of course the culprits are the Filthy Multinational Conglomerate Big Ass Record Companies, who formerly just stunk, but who nowadays stink with the holy vengeance of a nuclear-powered turd. But even though it's harder to find the hidden gems out there, I actually end up hearing most of the obscure stuff that should appeal to me because I routinely follow leads I get here at loud-fans. And I end up feeling, as always, that there's more good music out there than ever, but less great music. It might be because I'm getting old and weird (as glenn suspects), but whatever. I put TURN ON THE BRIGHT LIGHTS at #6 but I've had it in my discman for the past week and listening to it after the fact has me convinced that I may soon regret rating it that *low*. WHEN I WAS CRUEL was my #8 and it too might have ranked higher if only it had been trimmed from a 15 track record with three or four weak songs to a tighter, slightly shorter one. But no, I don't think this was a lackluster year for music at all unless you are only examining the popular side of things (Avril, Eminem, etc). In quantity I may not have found a lot of great records but in quality my Top 9 made this probably my favorite year in music since 1998.
