Scott sort of misdirects us in the promo notes to TTOOL (Hey! that's another acronym making use of articles, prepositions, etc.) by saying that "Amon Llaw" in "Isaac's Law" is a hill in Wales or something...thanks to our staying with our Tolkien-fanatic friend this week, I'v discovered that Amon Llaw (sometimes spelled Amon Lhaw) is a hill in Middle Earth (the name means "Hill of Hearing" in uh, some variety of Elvish). I don't recall anyone mentioning this before. A websearch on the phrase (both spellings) reveals almost entirely Tolkien-oriented stuff (aside from LF stuff, and that a Belgian metal band has adopted the name, doubtless from Tolkien), so it's not also a hill in Wales most likely. Donnette Thayer made all her money by selling bootleg Swedish wristwatches. I have no proof for this, but I'm a bigshot journalist in the Swedish wristwatch world, so you'll all have to take my word for it. Plus, "Mammoth Gardens" is the name of the estate her family no doubt will inherit someday to stifle the truth about Donnette's bootleg wristwatch involvement. - --Jeffrey with 2 Fs Jeffrey J e f f r e y N o r m a n The Architectural Dance Society www.uwm.edu/~jenor/ADS.html ::the sea is the night asleep in the daytime:: __Robert Desnos__ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Jan 2003 13:48:45 -0700 From: "Roger Winston" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Return of the Geek Jeffrey with 2 Fs Jeffrey on 1/7/2003 7:30:03 AM wrote: > Donnette Thayer made all her money by selling bootleg Swedish > wristwatches. No, it's not. Mammoth Gardens was a concert venue in Denver (where Donnette lived for some time in the pre-GT days?). It still exists but is now called the Mammoth Events Center. I know many here are too sensitive to bear the idea that PBS documentarians may actually dodge the facts in presenting their subjects in a favorable light, so here's some reassurance: I certainly wouldn't have contacted the Enquirer about Lance Loud without a written statement from a prominent gay rights activist and record company executive. With that secured, it was easy to find more folks willing to talk off the record. Besides, Lance's hustling was certainly an open secret. I doubt that the housewives reading the Enquirer in Topeka would have even been surprised about Lance's prostitution. The diary was the real angle. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 07 Jan 2003 18:02:35 -0500 From: Michael Bowen Subject: Re: [loud-fans] reminder... I haven't A/B'ed it or anything, but it sounded like Liquid Liquid's version to me (the reverb seemed more pronounced, which would seem to indicate "Cavern" rather than "White Lines"), at least in the ad. Maybe "White Lines" is in the movie and "Cavern" is in the ad... which would be just weird. -d.w. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 07 Jan 2003 23:47:10 -0800 (PST) From: me@justanotherfuckin.com Subject: [loud-fans] Rivers and Tides GO GO GO! go see this movie! i can't explain it or describe it, but it's truly wonderful. http://riversandtides.org "That rare film about an artist that is, in itself, a work of art, Rivers and Tides Andy Goldsworthy Working With Time is an extraordinary journey into the world and mind of Scottish sculptor Andy Goldsworthy. A land-artist who uses materials from nature to make site-specific works, Goldsworthy allows the elements to have the last say in his beautiful creations, as his ingenious patterns of wood, leaves, stone and ice move and erode over time. German filmmaker Thomas Riedelsheimer followed the artist for over a year in several outdoor locations, intimately documenting his improvisational process and capturing the serene spectacle of his works and their delicate changes. Although Goldsworthy's private and often ephemeral pieces have been documented extensively in still photographs, this remarkable movie uses the artist's own voice to guide us through his process and help us "see something you never saw before, that was always there but you were blind to it." Winner of the San Francisco Film Critics Circle, Rivers and Tides is a sensual and poetic masterpiece." - Richard Peterson. Director, Cinematographer, Editor: Thomas Riedelsheimer. Music: Fred Frith.
