No such thing as RING 3. However, the third Japanese RING film, the prequel, is called RING 0. Ta-da! I should point out by the way that you can get all three Japanese RING films, and the Korean/Japanese RING VIRUS, through Scarecrow Video, probably the greatest video store on the planet: www.scarecrow.com Although frankly, if you wish to place an order, you should email me offlist. I know a couple of the fellows at Scarecrow, and they can get stuff for me at cost. Oh, and Nakata Hideo, director of the first two RING films, has a newer picture, DARK WATER (Honogurai mizu no soko kara), which I saw at the Seattle Film Festival, and found a most chilling and sad ghost story. It too is adapted from the prose of Suzuki Koji, and it too is available through Scarecrow. So long as I'm still in list/link mania, the Internet Movie Database reports that "Sight And Sound" just published a list of "the greatest films of the past 25 years," as compiled by "a panel of 50 British critics and film writers." Insanely, I can't find anything about this at the site for the British Film Institute ("Sight And Sound"'s publisher), but according to the Database, here's the list (with one film I'd never even heard of, no less): 1. APOCALYPSE NOW (version unspecified) 2. RAGING BULL 3. FANNY AND ALEXANDER 4. GOODFELLAS 5. BLUE VELVET 6. DO THE RIGHT THING 7. BLADE RUNNER (version unspecified) 8. CHUNGKING EXPRESS 9. DISTANT VOICES, STILL LIVES 10. (tie) ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA (version unspecified), and YI YI (A ONE AND A TWO...) And oh yeah, escribe's been broken about a week. Anybody know the story? Probably the fact that the set itself keeps getting delayed. Another Universe has promised about four different shipping dates, the most recent being early December, that they haven't delivered on. On Wednesday they opened with one of their oldest pieces - "You Are My Sunshine" from You Could Live in Hope - and the stunning new song "(That's How You Sing) Amazing Grace," from Trust. I was seated in the front row, dead center. If I leaned forward a smidgen, all I could see or hear was the band and those harmonies. In the churchlike environment of a Low concert, at least before they start cracking jokes in the encore, that's like a High Mass. The bulk of the material in the set was from Trust and Things We Lost in the Fire. I bought Trust just before the set and hadn't heard any of the songs before, but they did "Amazing Grace," "Canada," "In the Drugs," "John Prine," and many, many more. I thought "Amazing Grace" and "It's in the Drugs" were brilliant, but "Canada" does little for me so far either on record or in concert. "The Lamb" was harrowing, but reached and then passed the point of diminishing returnings after too many repetitions of the final chorus. But Pink Floyd's "Fearless" was ravishingly beautiful and had the Floyd fans among us in awe (it will appear on the single for "Canada"). Two of the highlights were from Things We Lost, including the remarkable "In Metal" and "Sunflower." "Two Step" from Secret Name was another charmer. As the set progressed, the mood lightened a bit, as Alan and Mimi and Zak are wont to. The band offered to take requests, and did "Over the Ocean" and "Starfire" from some of their earlier records. Zak's abortive attempt at Iggy Pop's "I Wanna Be Your Dog" ended badly, and the band reverted to its own material. "The hits," moaned Alan, "they only want the hits," in response to calls for "Dinosaur Act." During the show (at moments when I wasn't simply in awestruck wonder), I thought to myself how Low has crafted a unique career and artistic arc for itself. By writing songs of indisputably high calibre, and their disciplined approach to touring and recording, the band have built a sizable audience for music that initially struck me as nichey at best, and a novelty at worst. Whereas other bands traveling the same stylistic roads as Low (Idaho, Codeine, etc.) have remained sideline acts, Low has really made itself the exemplars of its form. Opening act was Pan Am(erican), a knob-twiddler from Chicago who made beeping, whirring, clunking and buzzing noises for an interminable half-hour. He was very polite, however. Brendan Benson / Graves Brothers Deluxe at Meow Meow - In a stark change of pace, the show I saw last night was Brendan Benson and the Wellfed Boys at all-ages, junior-high-friendly Meow Meow. Benson mostly does doctrinaire power pop, but he's very good at it. Every song I heard had catchy choruses, toe-tapping verses and abundant energy. Backed up by a four piece band, his songs had sufficient meatiness and drive to rock, but there's no disguising this he's a pop songwriter. I didn't know any of the material, but liked almost all of it. He did songs from One Mississippi and the new Lapalca, and the crowd seemed to dig it. Kinda nice to see 15 year olds happily listening to power pop; it's almost as if Korn and Emimem never happened. Opening band was Graves Brothers Deluxe from San Francisco. I didn't know anything about them but was reading the track listings on their CD at the merch table, and saw some familiar names. It turns out their lead singer/bassist used to be in Thin White Rope, with Jozef Becker (later of the Loud Family). Becker plays on some of their records. Too bad I didn't like any of it. - -------------------------------------- Michael J. The box set, sans bonus disc, just finally began shipping, and last time I checked UPS' tracking site my copy had made it from California to Indiana. The bonus disc remains a subject of conjecture: what will be on it, if it will actually be produced as promised, when if ever it will be delivered, etc. A warning: do not deal with Another Universe, and if you are called to serve on a jury for their fraud trial, don't listen to any of their excuses. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 9 Nov 2002 16:38:24 EST From: AWeiss4338@aol.com Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Soft Boys Question In a message dated 11/9/02 10:16:26 AM Eastern Standard Time, phil.gerrard@ntlworld.com writes: > Yes, I'm with Dan on this - to me, 'Underwater Moonlight' is a near- > as-dammit-to-perfect album, one of those rare records which does > exactly what it sets out to do. Right, a friend mentioned the Labradford connection. I had their first album, and thought it was kinda ok, but not my thing. Gave it away in the Great CD Giveaway of 2001. n.p.
