See, I think Mann's voice *is* distinctive, and her arrangements (though not so much on LIS as on, say, _I'm with Stupid_) are fairly inventive and captivating. So (as I kind of suspected) I don't think the issue is completely mid-tempoitis, it's also one's response to her voice and arrangement style. Aside to Elizabeth Brion: hey, how about Sandy Denny from Fairport Convention? Uh-and...what's the link to those pictures from your wedding? Further aside: We saw _Punch-Drunk Love_ last night. Loved it - was (pleasantly) surprised that it ended when it did...I guess I was expecting a P.T. Anderson epic. Man, what a deeply *weird* score - but it contributed greatly to the film's mood. ..Jeff J e f f r e y N o r m a n The Architectural Dance Society www.uwm.edu/~jenor/ADS.html :: Solipsism is its own reward :: :: --Crow T. I think they found the tapes in their basement or something. Royal Trux: I can never get enough of this stuff. I'm starting to think of it as the scum-rock approach to making a jazz album. Despite the fact that the building blocks are drum machine, junkie vocals, Stones guitar and about 8 million un-synced overdubs, the end result hits my ears much the same as "Bitches Brew." While slightly less crazed than what ended up on "Twin Infinitives," it's definitely in the same ballpark. *Not* for fans of "Thank You" and what follows. *Doesn't* actually sound like "Bitches Brew." Pavement: Love the remix (more drums and bass, but the balance is preserved). Could live without the bonus tracks, though it's nice to be able to sell "Watery, Domestic." The live concert reveals without a doubt that the band's Achilles heel was the fact that their vocalist sucked, sucked, sucked. Song after song starts off sounding amazing, until some drunk karaoke fratboy starts braying. Sad. The booklet is fun. In a perfect world, I would have liked "Perfect Sound Forever," "Slanted and Enchanted" and "Watery, Domestic" with maybe "My First Mine" on one CD, and that would have been...perfect. You can burn the rest of their catalog as far as I'm concerned. Except for maybe "The Classical" on the Major Leagues single. BTW, also picked up the remastered UK version of the Rolling Stones' "Between The Buttons." "What's the difference between the UK and the US versions," I asked John, the cranky owner at Rockit Scientist. "On the UK version they sing with English accents" he replied. (pause). [John exchanges a look with his friend revealing that he knows that I'm an ignorant lowlife]. Anyways, the remastering is just godlike. Highly, highly, highly recommended for fans of that album and I do like the UK version better. Note to Aaron: John also revealed to me that he owns a non-album single by "Daughters of Albion" but then he got onto a rant about bridge and tunnel people, so I never found out the details. He is an angry man. - --dana ________________________________________________________________ Sign Up for Juno Platinum Internet Access Today Only $9.95 per month! Multi-region DVD players are cool. 2. Each Miyazaki movie I see makes me like *all* of them more. 3. Including the original storyboards as a second "angle" to the whole film seems to be a standard Studio Gibli DVD extra now, and while it's a cool idea, Miyazaki's storyboards aren't quite detailed or numerous enough for me to really sit through the whole movie that way. Tonight it dawned on me that the storyboards actually lend themselves *very* well to watching on fast-forward. Sped up by 4 (or, for the really impatient, 20), they make for a very cool compressed recap of the movie. 4. One of the other extras on the second Totoro disc is a short tour of the then-(2001)-still-under-construction Studio Gibli Museum in Tokyo, which is now near the top of my list of things to see when I eventually make it to Tokyo. Among the attractions, for _Spirited Away_ fans, are a reconstruction of the baby's room (with the whole ceiling mural reproduced), and a breathtaking version of the bathhouse's multistory main chamber, complete with the catwalk across the middle. A pity that the plush playset version of the cat-bus from Totoro looks like it's child-scale, not Totoro-scale... glenn ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 3 Nov 2002 23:55:21 -0600 From: steve Subject: Re: [loud-fans] more Miyazaki > 4.
