Thanks, Stewart - this is exactly the information I needed. So I'm feeling bravely confessional tonight - one reason I'm investigating Miss Starr, among others, today is that I've just started taking voice lessons for the first time in some years. As some of you know and most of you don't, I used to sing semiprofessionally until an endless series of respiratory infections shot my voice to hell. I've made a few recovery attempts, but have tended to get incredibly discouraged the first time something doesn't sound perfect (usually about the fourth note) and slack off on practicing. This time, I'm feeling ready to really do it - I've committed myself to the point that I'm making a 450-mile round trip to LA twice a month to work with the best coach I know. My short-term goal is to do some musical theater locally, then think about moving forward once I've gotten used to being on any stage again. I sort of have a point here, which is that during my other attempts at getting my chops back, I've picked up the bad habits of anyone I happen to be listening to at the time like Velcro. I totally love, for example, the Nields, but it's horrifying the number of vocal problems I can adopt from listening to them during this sensitive time. So, in an attempt to build up my musical immune system, I've decided to expose myself only to good vocal influences for a few months. (Or instrumentals - I foresee a lot of horn players in my immediate future!) I'm trying to build a little collection of alto singers with good, clean, solid technique and not too many distinctive mannerisms (although this doesn't mean they have to be completely boring, either). I'm open to different styles - it's mainly the quality of the voice I'm interested in at the moment. Any suggestions? Private email might be best, as I don't imagine a group brought together by their love of Scott Miller has an overriding interest in flawless vocal technique! Sounds interesting to me...although I'm not sure what you mean by "good, clean, solid technique" outside of any musical context. That is, depending on what style of singing you want to do, some things would be okay that would be un-okay in others. (I mean, there are certain mechanical basics that I'm sure you know about...but, say, a certain nasality works well in pop-rock that doesn't in opera.) All my favorite singers tend to do what they do quite well and have very distinctive voices that usually aren't all that "good" conventionally (hmmm...sound like anyone we all know?). So I'm not sure I can help you directly anyway, but it's an interesting topic, I think. I officially don't get this show at all...it's like my doctor got a weekly comedy series...the timing is dismal, the show just seems like a boring character filmed for hours on end (not that my doctor is boring). I sat through 15 minutes last night (a repeat where he has a meeting with Jason Alexander) with maybe one very slight chuckle...really, I thought "In The Bedroom" was funnier. Another thing, I recall someone bringing up the 70's band Fanny on the list recently. I don't recall ever hearing them but I must of 'cause those Warner Bros Loss Leaders from the 70's were a huge inspiration to my teen self. That said, I thought I'd mention two things...1stly, if it wasn't said before (and I bet it was the reason they came up in the first place and I missed it), Rhino Handmade has just released a Fanny boxed set (4 discs with a 52 page booklet)...it's an edition of 5000 by internet order only...steep at $79.98 but Rhino Handmade put out some amazing packages. Only their web site is really difficult to navigate...takes my high-speed connection ages to download their pages. The other thing about Fanny, and this may have come up here before too, Dave Millington who recorded Game Theory's Pointed Accounts and Distortion in his and Dave Gill's living room is brother to the two Fanny sisters. It was through one of the sisters that Earl Slick (aka Ernie Smith...he was/is one of their husbands) was roped into playing those guitar parts on Shark Pretty & Kid Convenience. I don't think I wreck anything here but here's a spoiler - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - It's not at all like Hard 8, Boogie Nights or Magnolia. Well it's more linear like Hard 8 and it has some of the odd aligning of the planets weirdness of Magnolia (and some of David Lynch's stuff) but the tone is substantially different. Also, the musical score is a big element and takes the place of PT Anderson's use of songs as a part of the story...really I only recall a song or 2 at the end. Really it is quite a nice fable of two really messed up, lonely people finding love in spite of their damaged socially inept selves. Refreshingly, it doesn't play off that grand notion of finding love as some magical Hollywood Sleepless In Seattle moment, but rather goes in a much different direction for a love story and kinda suggests that sometime it can just blossom from need. Adam Sandler...well, oddly Anderson used his idiot child act, strips it of it's dude appeal and all of it's schtick and exposes what's left for all it's socially pathetic pathos. Saw it Friday and haven't read any reviews yet but hopefully it's getting some good reactions. It's certainly unique. - - Dan ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Oct 2002 22:56:21 -0700 From: Roger Winston Subject: Re: [loud-fans] GTA? WTF?
