They did a song called "Jane September". Do you know if they also did a song called "25 Reasons", or was that someone else? All that turns up on AMG is that they existed and were in the "rock" genre. Lyrics go: Well I live in a city made of bricks and steel In a building by a river that flows like a wheel. I don't have much money, but boy! if I did I'd buy a little boat and I'd just sail away. I've got 25 reasons for what I do And one is you. I haven't yet joined emusic, but can tell you that one of their primary aquisitions VP's was pretty much THE pivitol musical mentor to Scott, Steve Wynn, John Silva and myself in the mid-late 70's. His name is Ray Farrell and he worked at Rather Ripped Records at the north gate to UC Berkeley back in the 70's. He clued us in to Big Star, Velvet Underground, Television, Sneakers, Pere Ubu, dB's, Can, Neu, Wire, etc. and he clued me into ALRN...he and I even went to see ALRN at the Mabuhay Gardens together but they cancelled that night (it would have been their swansong). After Rather Ripped he was one the if stalwarts at the start of Rough Trade US (circa 1981-82). He gave me my first paying road job (he & I took care of the Panther Burns with Alex C on the road in 82). At the Rough Trade store, he sold me on the first REM single on the day it came in, that day he also sold me the great "Belinda" single debut from The Eurythmics (more Tourists than Sweet Dreams), wish I still had that. He also had a radio show on KPFA at this time called Assassinatin' Rhythm where he would play my pre-Clarinette improv stuff...I appeared on the show once with Henry Kaiser & Diamanda Galas (couldn't stand either) and a few other times. He was also one of the founders of Maximum Rock & Roll. After Rough Trade he went to SST and helped build that into an 80's force, from their he was one of the people behind Blast First US and then to Geffen/DGC where, among other things, he orchestrated the Pere Ubu box. After the Segrams shake up in the record industry in the late 90's (last I heard, Fred Durst was "president" of DGC), he was brought in to emusic. He's a remarkable guy. I know this is all very after the fact, but here's a list of pop records I love in alpha order, I've skipped the art, 60's and non pop 70's, DIY, Folk, etc. but still I could list 100 or more out right classics so 10 seems unrealistic to me, so I kept it short (14), this is pop: Big Star Radio City (the two on one is cool but this is a perfect album on it's own) Chills Brave Words The Clean Compilation The dB's- Stands For Decibels/Repercussions CD Feelies Crazy Rhythm Flamin Groovies Shake Some Action Fleetwood Mac Tusk Game Theory Real Nighttime (Lolita Nation may be it's equal) The Last LA Explosion The Loud Family Interbabe Concern (also Days For Days) Rain Parade Emergency Third Rail Power Trip/Explosions In The Glass Palace CD Smoking Popes- Destination Failure Soft Boys Underwater Moonlight Tall Dwarfs Hello Cruel World Just got the Camper Van Beethoven version of Tusk when we were in Santa Cruz last weekend, not sure it's very good. oh yeah, some one mentioned Louise Goffin. I read in an article that she went to High School with Darby Crash, I thought that was funny...not sure why. - - Dan - ----------------------------------------------------------- King Record Lathe Universe Web http://home.attbi.com/~cassetto/ Xpressway List Group http://www.egroups.com/group/Xpressway - ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Oct 2002 12:57:12 -0600 From: Jeffrey with 2 Fs Jeffrey Subject: Re: [loud-fans] emusic + pop Quoting Vallor : > After Rough Trade he went to SST and helped build that into an 80's force, > from their he was one of the people behind Blast First US and then to > Geffen/DGC where, among other things, he orchestrated the Pere Ubu box. I've often wondered how on earth that thing ever got released. Very strange...sure, obscure band that'd been on nearly as many different labels as it had releases, and release a box set of its classic back catalog... I wonder how well that one sold in comparison with most DGC box sets... - -- Jeff J e f f r e y N o r m a n The Architectural Dance Society www.uwm.edu/~jenor/ADS.html :: Californians invented the concept of the life-style. :: This alone warrants their doom. :: --Don DeLillo, _White Noise_ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Oct 2002 13:06:07 -0600 From: Jeffrey with 2 Fs Jeffrey Subject: [loud-fans] test - -- Jeff J e f f r e y N o r m a n The Architectural Dance Society www.uwm.edu/~jenor/ADS.html :: Californians invented the concept of the life-style. :: This alone warrants their doom. :: --Don DeLillo, _White Noise_ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Oct 2002 22:50:24 -0000 From: "richblath" Subject: [loud-fans] And after all that... top 10 stuff that was prompted by the Q magazine poll, when I came to try to upload my choices and reasons the site failed miserably to process them, ...and what's more the email address that you were supposed to send information of malfunctioning pages to wasn't accepting messages either! Feeling kind of guilty, I bought the new St. Etienne CD which sounds very solid on first listen: neither better nor worse than most of their other output that I've heard. My fave remains "Sound of Water" but I think I'm in the minority there. Anyway, I noticed the new Donnas CD and, um, yikes!! That's some cover, and now that they've turned 21 I don't think that I have to feel bad when I say that. Can someone please tell me that their new album is a breakthrough and that it doesn't sound like everything else they've done? Please? I really want an excuse to see the DVD that comes with it. The Camper Van box isn't out till next week...drat. And nobody seems to have the new Brave Captain CD. Double drat. Rented Lagaan over the weekend. Was that discussed here? I think it would have wide appeal. Shari and I are wondering if the Ferenghi on Star Trek take their name from the slur that comes up a lot in this movie. Sorry to the trekkies if I just misspelled Ferenghi, but I'm not on the internet so I can't double check. - --dana ________________________________________________________________ Sign Up for Juno Platinum Internet Access Today Only $9.95 per month! To me, it was as if those girls on the 'Addicted to Love' video had been convinced by some manager that they were a REAL ROCK AND ROLL BAND, DAMMIT! and had gone out and recorded an album accordingly. For the first time, I really kind of felt for them, in that I thought that they knew that they'd outlived the gimmicks and wanted to prove themselves, but simply didn't have the means to do so. Please note that I'm recently spoken for and therefore rationing my heterosexual urges rather heavily at the moment. of *course* you're prettier, honey... phil ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Oct 2002 19:16:09 EST From: JRT456@aol.com Subject: Re: [loud-fans] donnas (ns) I think a lot of people are disappointed to hear that The Donnas' major-label debut sounds like the third-rate imitation that people would've expected Atlantic to sign after being rejected by the actual group. I saw a photo of them recently, and was very sad. Their shtick was really fun, and now they look like The Runaways crossed w/ Erin Moran ca. 1978. I don't have the heart to listen to any of their new music. Phil, I'm very jealous that you get to see THE COAST OF UTOPIA. ACT in SF recently procuced NIGHT AND DAY, which is very good. They make a point of producing Stoppard's work regularly, and he did a sitdown w/ the artistic director, which was fascinating. He has the quintessentially plummy accent... The word presumably used in the movie (which I didn't see) has a semitic root present in Arabic, Persian and other dialects throughout the Middle East and Central Asia. It's also in Hindi. "Faranji" usually means "foreigner" in fus'ha, or standard Arabic. The Egyptian pronouncian is "Farangi", as they don't like the "j" sound for some reason. In Thailand, the word means "Westerner/Caucasian"; it may also be related to the word for Frenchman (Francais, Frank. Oddly enough, a Polynesian word for white foreigners is "palangi" last played in my car: Chills, "Kaleidoscope World." Anyone ever found cover versions of Chills songs? Martyn Phillips needs his K.
