The track was produced by Leslie Kong. I should also note that I consider Toots and the Maytals the finest Reggae act going. Less politics and more songs about "love" and "ganja". You could do a lot worse than pick up their two-disc anthology "Time Tough". Of course, you're probably already familiar with them from their standout performances on "The Harder They Come". I'd also recommend their "hit" record "Funky Kingston". Be forewarned - Toots sounds nothing like Kraut-rock. BTW: I thought it was cute that some credit card company used Toots' "Monkey Man" in a recent commercial. Doug S. (or if I'm the only Doug left around here, simply Doug) - -------------------------------- From Stewart: Anyway, the general idea is that rock steady then turned into reggae in late '67/early '68 (Leslie Kong's "Do the Reggay" is credited with the birth of the sound and the name, although again, reggae fans love a good scrap over what was "the first real reggae record" as much as other folks love to play "What was the first rock and roll song?"). - ----------------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Oct 2002 12:53:17 -0700 From: Steve Holtebeck Subject: [loud-fans] Fwd: John Moremen News This is exciting news, except for the bit about John and Larry leaving the Orange Peels. The Parkside is a very cool venue, and John Moremen's band with Chris Xefos + half the Sneetches is definitely worth seeing. Also, Alison Faith Levy (remember her?) is playing with them on 11/6. Also for SF area loud-fans: Amy Rigby is playing tonight (10/16) at the Hotel Utah and tomorrow (10/17) at the Starry Plough. That "event" that happened the last time she played the Bay Area that I told some of you about was probably a one-shot deal, so people shouldn't be scared away by any possibility of unwelcome duets with audience members at these shows. - -Steve - -------- Original Message -------- Subject: John Moremen News Date: Wed, 16 Oct 2002 10:00:09 -0700 From: Suzie & John Hey friends- After three years with The Orange Peels, John has decided to concentrate on his own music and a number of new projects. This tour was basically > just sort of a proper farewell. I don't believe so. John Moremen didn't even join the Orange Peels until the recording of SO FAR. He's only been in the band for three years, and played drums on SO FAR as well as a few songs on AVAILABLE LIGHT. He replaced original drummer Bob Vickers, who left the band along with Larry Winther in mid-1999, but they both rejoined to tour behind SO FAR, with Bob moving from drums to guitar/keyboards. They played as a five piece (Allen, Jill, Larry, Bob, John) behind SO FAR, then dropped to a quartet after Bob's final adios, and now with John and Larry's final show, it's down to just Allen & Jill. I've seen the Orange Peels live more than a dozen times in the last five years, so I'm familiar with their personnel changes. The story through SO FAR is outlined at http://www.theorangepeels.com/bio.html. - -Steve ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Oct 2002 17:57:05 EDT From: JRT456@aol.com Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Reggae - The Streets? I actually disagree about this -- I think it's the perfect length, if only because if it were any longer, the songs would blend together even more than they already do. As noted on another list, this album reminds me a ton of the Primitives' LOVELY or the Darling Buds' POP SAID, two other albums that are Just Long Enough. The one album that comes to mind as Just Long Enough is Badfinger-HEAD START. I was surprised when I saw it was only 32 Minutes long. It made its point and that was it. I was left wanting more at the end of VELOCITY OF SOUND. However, I thought DISCOVERY OF A WORLD INSIDE THE MOONE was also Just Long Enough. The extra stuff that got on singles was "icing". FUN TRICK NOISEMAKER is the only one I don't have yet. I was left kinda cold with TONE SOUL EVOLUTION. I don't know why.. maybe I should listen again. I always likened HER WALLPAPER REVERIE to an EP.. I got it at an EP price and it seemed about right considering the many 'interludes' it has. 27 minute EP = fine by me.
