I disagree because we see the trucker's boots. It's the boots that are the villain. Only kidding, but the boots are worn by the trucker, so I think it is the trucker who is the villain. He's controlling the 18-wheeler. Not seeing the trucker's face was a great device to use in adding to the suspense and paranoia and, since it was a low budget movie for television, it didn't cost Spielberg a dime. In low budget horror flicks, the fear is compounded because the slasher's face is generally not seen. (does not seeing the slasher's face make the knife he uses the villain?) We fear what we do not know. If we saw the trucker's face at any time, "Duel" would not be discussed on a list three decades later. It would be resting untouched in a vault somewhere in Nevada, right next to episodes of "BJ and the Bear." - -Mark S. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Oct 2002 20:44:36 -0400 From: Dana Paoli Subject: [loud-fans] for sale? (ns) I'm assuming that this is ok, but if it's not I won't do it again. But, I've recently discovered that: 1. Emusic *really* is wonderful, and, 2. I can live with mp3s of the new Soft Boys and Apples CDs (both likely to be on loud-fans shopping lists), so... If anyone wants to buy my brand new copies for $8.00 each, please contact me off list. For the love of god, Emusic even has the Starfuckers!! BTW, I picked up the new reissue of the Flaming Lips' "In a Priest Driven Ambulance" which is called "The Day They Shot a Hole in the Jesus Egg" and have mixed feelings about it. The remastering does bring up the bass, but by doing so you lose a little bit of the wall-of-noise effect that the original had. The demos range from uninteresting to mildly interesting; same for the bonus tracks. The extra songs from the ep are ok, but nothing to go crazy over. And I wish that the liner notes were a little less literary and a little more detail oriented. At $19 at my local store (probably less elsewhere) it's not exactly a bad deal, but if you own the original CD and have to make budgetary decisions, it wouldn't be the end of the world if you hold off on this. If you don't have it, of course, it's utterly essential. - --dana *btw, I'm not dissing the Apples. Nice album, but it's sort of monochromatic sounding, and keeps reminding me of Black Flag's "TV Party." Not melodically, but just in the production and the sound of the guitars and drums. Vocally, there's no resemblance, and boy do they sound like chipmunks on this one!! ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! I 'd heard it was very funny and all improvised. I don't get cable now-I wish there was a way to just get HBO but I think you have to get 50 or something channels which I would never watch and order HBO as an extra. I just rented the DVD this evening. When Woody is 80, will he still be going for 23-year-olds in his movies? "Those who can't do, teach. And those who can't teach, teach gym. And of course, those who couldn't do anything were assigned to our school." Emusic *really* is wonderful, and, That's for sure. I see they just uploaded a new old Sonic Youth live album (from '86 -- mostly stuff from _Evol_, looks like) Other things worth checking out: just about everything on Matador (of course), essentially the entire Merck Records catalog (great GREAT indie electronic label from Florida), the Fax label (Pete Namlook's world-renowned ambient music label), a metric buttload of Atom Heart-related stuff on Rather Interesting, Marmoset's _Today It's You_, and about a million others. It's about the best $10 a month a person can spend, honestly. -d.w. ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V2 #360 *******************************
