I subbed yesterday a fifth grade reading class in a school that isn't 
self-contained (the subjects are taught by different teachers).  At the end 
of the class periods I asked the students to tell me their name and their 
hobbies.  I thought you all might find this interesting.  Only two kids out 
of about 120 mentioned anything to do with music.  The two that did were 
Blair Warner type girls who were of affluent backgrounds, and they said they 
liked to play piano.  Two kids said they liked to draw.  All the other kids, 
it was watching Spongebob, basketball, playing with the Playstation, hunting 
(this was in Fountain Inn, a small burb on the edge of G-ville), stuff like 
that.  

This surprised me a little, as this is totally different from the interests 
of 7th and 8th graders, where kids were asking me what bands I liked, and 
coming into class singing rap and pop songs.  Somewhere, around age 12, music 
becomes REALLY important.  What a difference two years makes.

This one boy was so sweet.  He was definitely the brightest kid I had all 
day.  He came up to me and gave me his "card" which he made on his computer 
and said, "I noticed you called on me more than once today.  My name is 
Brandon.  Here's my card."  He wanted my e-mail address.  He sent me a note.  
Teaching pay is crap, but it's stuff like the following that makes it 
worthwhile:

sub. for my reading class. I found out that i am able to get on my computer 
and send e-mails to my friends,and to be honest you are a good friend . Even 
though we only saw each other for 45min. In class you asked everyone to stand 
and say their name. Well i couldent say all my hobies , but i do bike

I for one think DUEL's 18-wheeler is itself the villain (certainly that
trucker's face is never seen).  But that's what lists are for, right?  They
start arguments, they start discussions, and they get you making your own
lists.  Not necessarily in that order.

Concluding reluctantly that no one here watches "The Shield" (speaking of
villains) or "Shoot The Dog,"

Both Kathryn Bigelow (who would later direct Katrin in "The Weight of
Water," which is due out later this year) and I were invited back after our
[Locarno] jury stint together to bring our favorite films: I brought a
Douglas Sirk movie, "There's Always Tomorrow," and Kathryn brought "The Wild
Bunch." Even with her heavy load -- and no one knew better than Kathryn and
I what was expected of you on that jury in terms of watching movies --
Katrin came with her boyfriend, the South African actor Peter Gevisser, to
see these films that had inspired us.

My last image of Katrin in Locarno was of her walking to the pool one
moonlit night with her beloved Peter, and how happy they looked together.
They were holding hands in matching terry-cloth robes from the hotel. They
were everything to each other in that image: lovers, best friends, brother
and sister, kindred souls. Me -- I was undoubtedly, as always, nursing some
bordering-on-masochism affection for someone who could not return it. I
wondered how she did that: She found him, he found her, and they were happy.
