(ns) We went to see Secretary last night and while our opinions weren't identical, Shari and I generally agreed that it was pretty bad. I disliked it more, and basically thought that it was so badly written and paced that I didn't even want to devote any energy to examining its sexual politics. Shari devoted a very little bit of energy to that, and thought that the sexual politics weren't so hot. I'll be interested to see if Mary Gaitskill publishes any sort of reaction: there is essentially no resemblance between this movie and the original short story. Whoever designed the sets does know there way around a house of dominance, though. I can't say that the movie is worthless, as there were a few funny bits here and there, but it's sure not worth paying $10 to see. Earlier we rented the DVD of CQ, which I had wanted to see in the theaters but...I was under the impression at the time that it was in French, which scared away all of my friends, who are apparently francophobes. It turns out that it's not in French and that it's a great rental. Plot summary etc. is here: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/CQ-1114247/reviews.php While not brilliant, the movie was a whole lot of fun, with cool 60's-Paris sets, cute references to all sorts of '60's movies, fantastic clothes, a terrific soundtrack (by French band Mellow*), and a very cute star or two. I'd find it hard to believe that folks here wouldn't find *something* to like about it. Much more fun if you've seen a bunch of Godard/Fellini movies. - --dana *Really, really liked the soundtrack, and I've already placed an order for the CD. Any other "Jet Set" types heard it?? I see that they have an earlier album as well. Any thoughts?? ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Anybody fond of long, confusing Asian films is hereby enthusiastically encouraged by me to make the necessary effort to see last year's confrontational Japanese confused-teens movie _Lily Chou-Chou no Subete_, which is just now starting to be shown here in the US under the translated title _All About Lily Chou-Chou_. Vicious high-school pecking-order struggles, the secret online lives of closet pop fans, some astonishing cinematography (including what I'm pretty sure is the most beautiful sequence yet created with a digital video camera), and as adroitly integrated a soundtrack as anything since _Harold & Maude_ (including lots of Debussy and one stunning a cappella choir performance, in addition to quite a bit of the fictional title character's shimmery pop). Info and itinerary at http://www.lily-chou-chou.com/world/. 2. Anybody fond of movies, at all, is also encouraged to find the time to rewatch the movie _Brazil_ in its 3-DVD Criterion Collection edition. Watch the director's cut, so it's fresh in your mind, then watch it again with Terry Gilliam's hyperactive commentary, then watch the hour-long documentary on disc 2 about his fight with Universal over the movie's tone, then watch Universal's drastic re-edit (the TV version) on disc 3. Not all at once, mind you, but in as close succession as you can practically manage. I can personally assure you that you'll learn more than you'd get from a year-long Harvard film-theory course. glenn ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Sep 2002 02:05:07 -0400 From: Stewart Mason Subject: Re: [loud-fans] two movie recommendations At 01:50 AM 9/23/2002 -0400, glenn mcdonald wrote: >1. Charity and I both raved about this after last year's Toronto festival, and I'm really happy to see that it's getting wider distribution in the states. Be warned that it's about the bleakest depiction of adolescence I have ever seen on film, if that sort of thing bothers you.
