For those who haven't heard, the ex-Redd Kross bass player has added himself to the White Stripes, overdubbing bass parts and some harmonies. The whole album, plus a nice cover, is available for download at: http://www.reddkross.com/home.html?reddstripes/index.html~content The project was ok'd by Mr. White, so there's no need to feel guilty about it. - --dana ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Here's my reasoning, which contains the simplifying assumptions that all years have 365 days, and that a random person is equally likely to be born on any day of the year or in any month of the year (ignoring birth rate fluctuations over the year, as Jen mentioned). Pick three people at random from the group of twelve and consider the probability that they all have a birthday on some particular day. That probability is (1/365)^3. To generalize to the probability that that shared birthday could be on *any* day of the year, multiply by 365. Now pick another three people at random from the remaining nine, and consider the probability that those three people have a birthday in the same month as the first three, and that the remaining six do not. That probability is (1/12)^3 * (11/12)^6. To then generalize to the probability that *any* three of the twelve people could be the ones with the same birthday and *any* three of the remaining nine could be the ones with birthdays in the same month, you multiply the above probability by the number of different ways that you could have picked the initial three people and then the next three people, which is "12 choose 3" times "9 choose 3" = 12!/3! * 9!/3! = 220 * 84 = 18480. So the final calculation is (1/365)^3 * 365 * (1/12)^3 * (11/12)^6 * 18480 = 0.000047625-- pretty close to the 1 in 20,000 glenn suggested. I'm pretty sure this is right, although as Roger suggests, we could run it by Marilyn vos Savant. Yeah, but if she's so damn smart, why is she working for Parade? You would think she could at least score a gig at USA Today Weekend or something. However, there was some quasi-risque footage at Blaine's friend's party of some rich kids dancing in undies that I'd never seen before, but no bonus anything. I forgot how great Annie Potts is in that film: "This ain't the public library light fingers!" "You missed my eye by an inch!" "HALF an inch." Oh, as far as the '80s goes, Lacoste shirts are back. Tell Lisa Birnbach to come out of hiding. - -Mark Staples np: Future Bible Heroes "Eternal Youth" The cover is Hawaiian kitsch.
