I'm not equipped to comment on the legitimacy of the claim, although there's an interesting press release at the jpeg.org site. But this is pretty similar to what happened with GIF files, and CompuServe won their licensing fees, and the internet is still here. Everybody who made a software tool that incorporated the GIF format had to fork over some dough, but as far as I know, nobody had to belly-up as a result. Isn't the same thing due to happen with the MP3 format at the end of this year or the start of the next? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Jul 2002 11:00:09 -0500 From: zkk46@ttacs.ttu.edu Subject: Re: [loud-fans] modest proposal (ns) I don't know about you guys, but I was looking forward to reading about obscure bass players, and seeing pictures of fluffy kittens carpet-bombing Dresden, but neither boringstuff.com or kitties.com have anything fun. Also, for future reference the band that backs Caitlin is the same one that backs Chris Stamey on his future album which I've heard has been delayed again from this Fall to early 2003. For my money though, the best local (RDU) album has to be Glory Fountain's BLAME LOVE. Amazing sounding album that was a totally self financed affair though John Chumbris did work a distribution deal with Red Eye. This album is quantum leaps ahead of their first album and was recorded at the Fidelitorium. Will Rigby makes an appearance on drums. Of note, John's writing and singing partner is Lynn Blakey who was in Oh-Ok and in Let's Active touring band back in the day and who must have one of the most beautiful voices in existence. Lynn was more recently in a side project with Caitlin called Tres Chicas. I was going to refer everyone to the loudfamily.com website, but I can't seem to find the review there, though I'm sure it appears somewhere. Meanwhile, I'm typing it in. It's great to see a band that has demonstrated "little progression", "eggheady crooning", "constant personnel changes", a record that sold "pitifully", and who have produced "not-too-annoying...doodling" while making "barely a dent in the world outside" getting some press attention. Let's hear it for the Loud Family and their publicist!! (By the way, did anyone ever notice that Scott made his employees wear sunglasses in the promotional photo in order to emphasize their subservient status? Either that, or it's a secret sign that Scott is dead.) Over ten albums with Game Theory, his stalwart '80s college-radio band, and the Loud Family, his stalwart '90s college-radio band, visionary singer-songwriter Scott Miller barely made a dent in the world outside of his true-blue fan base. Oddly, this seemed apt -- Miller's songs were pep talks for those who came of age between New Order's "Blue Monday" in 1983 and the Cure's 1992 single "Friday I'm in Love," an aimless generation that was spinning off into the ether. Miller was forever rallying the kids yet also giving up on them, mourning the Lolita Nation (the title of Game Theory's now out-of-print 1987 masterpiece) that, in time, turned into a dot-com wasteland. If he showed little progression as a songwriter over his two-decade career, it was only because he seemed to spring from the head of James Joyce fully formed: Each [sic] of his albums bursts at the seams with tricky wordplay, puns and self-referential allusions set to angular power pop and not-too-annoying experimental doodling. From Ritual to Romance, an album of live recordings made during two Loud Family tours (1996 and 1998), is a great sampling of Miller's later output, with a few Game Theory favorites and ace covers of the Pixies' "Debaser" and My Bloody Valentine's "When You Sleep" thrown in. After constant personnel changes, the Loud Family line-up is close to perfection here -- which, on a live album, means that the musicians sound as sharp as they did in the studio. Happily, keyboardist Alison Faith Levy, who joined the band for its last two albums, ties Miller to his new-wave roots, and she adds silvery back-up to his eggheady crooning. Miller gave up on music after 2000's Attractive Nuisance sold pitifully. But the recent news that longtime fan and friend Aimee Mann has coaxed him out of retirement -- the duo is planning an album of acoustic covers of Loud Family songs -- may mean that this chronically underappreciated artist will find a larger audience, even it it's years late. -- Peter Terzian - --dana ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! (which got harder and harder each passing year) 2.In 1989 Stacie and I were walking in San Francisco and a punk-ass mofo ran up behind me and hit me in the face. I'm not sure if he used a bottle, or if the lenses in my glasses ending up doing the damage, but something sure did. Aside from the 20+ stitches in the skin around my right eye, I also had 10 stitches sewn into my lacerated cornea. About 50% of my iris ended up on my jacket that evening. The result of missing that much iris means that the world is way too bright for me.Outside sunlight, or indoor camera flashes look a heck of a lot different with that much light getting into my brain. Sunglasses help alot. 3.And yes, it was very important for me to show my subservience to Scott. He signed my 1099's. Wha-huh? "Pep talks"? "Rallying the kids"? Was this guy listening to Styx instead? How old is one expected to be in order to "come of age"? Aimeless generation? Dot.com wasteland? Oh pull-eaze. This sounds like the sh** people write about Douglas Coupland (STILL) that gets up my crack. I was about 16 when "Blue Monday" came out and 24 when that Cure tune was in heavy rotation. If Scott was forever rallying me, how come I didn't discover his music until I was 19 when my friend I hung out with at my local record store told me I had to have "Big Shot"? Believe me, that record was not getting airplay in this town then...maybe on 120 minutes, or on WUSC in Columbia, but c'mon. Stuff like this flows well and looks good in print, but it is so full of holes, it's frigging annoying.
