Rog's mp3'd buffy (and the extremely infamous advance "leaks" of _the eminem show_) fall into this category -- almost certainly Rog's disc wasn't bit-to-bit accurate with any other given disc -- if you use five different tools to convert an mp3 back to a wav, you'll get five (very slightly) different results -- but it was close enough, probably closer to the "archetypal buffy mp3 disc" than anything else, and there were a lot of discs floating around just then that were very similar, so it matched. ok, here's a dumb question: is there a "gold standard" for cd track times, and if so, what is it? we put the track times our mastering engineer supplied on our disc, but they don't match the times displayed by any of my cdr drives, or any of the cd players in the house. and i don't think any of those match each other. - -- d. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Jul 2002 07:42:39 -0500 (CDT) From: Jeffrey with 2 Fs Jeffrey Subject: Re: [loud-fans] computer challenged...won't you help? Or freedb.org But the weird thing is, because there are other CDs with the same number of tracks of the same length, it will misidentify CDs sometimes. Usually it gives you a choice. Also, many of these sites depend upon consumer uploading of track lists. What's annoying is all the mooks out there who upload track info and misspell everything, mix up artist and track names, ID comps as single-artist works (by *title*), etc. - --Jeffrey with 2 Fs Jeffrey J e f f r e y N o r m a n The Architectural Dance Society www.uwm.edu/~jenor/ADS.html ::Oxygen isn't a text:: __David Robbins__ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Jul 2002 09:21:21 -0500 (CDT) From: Jeffrey with 2 Fs Jeffrey Subject: [loud-fans] cynical marketers? What is the connection between Stussy clothing and this band, and the Nissan X-Terra? I don't know how many twenty somethings with X-Terras I've seen running around with a DMB sticker and a Stussy sticker on the back. I must add that Betsy's CDR was one of the most enjoyable swaps I've gotten in some time with several things I'll have to track down. Flashing Lights - Been Waiting I've really got get some things by this band. Yeah they sound a bit like Sloan, but that's not really a fair comparison as this is more garagey sounding. Love that crunching Mott-like chorus. Rock-a-Teens - Betwixt or Between I really didn't like this murky sound. Though I'd never heard them before, somehow this is not what I expected. Godzuki - Orange Red, Bright Blue Liked this a lot. The thin vocals reminded me of Shalini's. Maybe that's why Betsy included it. Neutral Milk Hotel - Naomi Really liked the drumming on this...just wish it was recorded more cleanly and more definition because it's the coolest part of the song. Hedwig and the Angry Inch Soundtrack - Wicked Little Town (Tommy Gnosis vers.) - ---- hit skip button NOW! ---- Beulah - Silverado Days I've got this album, but I must have never given it a fair listen as I loved this song, but didn't really recall hearing it. Thanks for making me go back to the stacks. Elf Power - The Winter Is Coming I like this and like this band, but they come across so much better live than on record. Seeing all these quirky little rhythms performed in your face is rather mesmerizing. Allen Clapp & His Orchestra - Didn't You Know? Allen's an Orange Peel right. This was kind of neat. Teenage Fanclub - The Ballad of John and Yoko I love TFC, but there's something really missing here. This is nowhere near up to the original, though I think the original would be extremely hard to top. Another band like the Posies that have a slew of covers. Velvet Crush - Everything Flows My god these guys are great! If it's got their name on it I'm buying it, but I already have this one. Inbreds - Amelia Earhart This kind of reminded me of REM. Never heard of them. Syd Barrett - Love You Ever since the Soundtrack of Our Lives and the Orgone Box I've been in this retro psych mode, so this sounded just delicious. Ahh I wonder what could have been.... Veronica Lake - Saints Above Liked that dreamy jangle sound. Tell me more. The Orange Peels - Mystery Lawn I've got to have this! Is all their stuff this good? The Minus 5 - Ghost Tarts of Stockholm Long live Mr. McCaughey. Sloan - I Love a Long Goodbye A nice closer and the song they chose to close their show here last month. Thanks Betsy. It was a gas. - -Larry ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Jul 2002 13:25:52 -0700 From: "me" Subject: [loud-fans] tonight at the True Love in Sacto bay area loud fans: friday, july the 19th - Anton-Alone Project continues its projected decline at the only and one TRUE LOVE COFFEEHOUSE, 24th and J, in the hot-seat on the grid. Velvet Crush have always seemed to me to be a band on the verge of greatness, but never quite manage it. > Inbreds - Amelia Earhart > This kind of reminded me of REM. Never heard of them. They are/were a 2-piece (from Canada?). I saw them in Leeds supporting someone like Buffalo Tom and thought that they sounded great. I've not got with me the copies of the 2 albums of their that I own so I can remember if this one is from Kombinator or the earlier one, but I do remember the track as being one of my faves of theirs. I preferred the earlier stuff, which tended to be sparser in the production. > The Orange Peels - Mystery Lawn > I've got to have this! Is all their stuff this good? An excellent album is So Far by the OPs, which I was kindly alerted to by many on this list. It has the benefit of starting and ending very strongly. On the strength of that I got a copy of their earlier (1st?) album, Square, from eBay, but was much less impressed with that. Still, I'd definitely reccommend that you get hold of a copy of So Far - it also featured in several loud-fans end of year lists, as I recall.
