I think I once suggested to Scott that The Loud Family could probably pull off a nifty version of Wire's "The 15th" (from the "154" album). I've also thought the notion of Thin White Rope tackling a Thin Lizzy tune (Thin White Lizzy?) would have been cool - "Emerald" or "Don't Believe A Word", maybe. Then there's also my dream duet: Ed Kuepper and Polly Harvey doing an extra-dry version of "I Got You, Babe". I recently found a (less-than-great-sounding) bootleg of The Dream Syndicate playing in Frankfurt around 1984 or so (Karl Precoda was still with them, but Kendra Smith was gone). They cover both "Ghostbusters" and "Sweet Home Alabama". I only wish I was making that up. My suggestion is to drink yourself *almost* to the point of death, then get the new Soft Boys album. But my priorities are weird. I've still 8 copies left. If it's the tape I'm thinking of (1987 solo radio gig), he played "These Things Take Time". He also covered "The Last of the Famous International Playboys" at a couple of recent solo shows. I saw Neil Finn on Sunday night (which is why I bailed early on the loud-chat), and Neil had Johnny Marr playing guitar with him for about half the set. I don't know if he's on the whole tour or just a part of it, and realize people over the age of 13 aren't supposed to take the Smiths seriously, but Johnny Marr is one amazing guitarist! They played two Smiths' songs, "There is a Light" and "How Soon is Now", that sounded quite a bit better (IMO) sung by Neil Finn instead of Morrissey. Marr plays guitar on Finn's superb live record, SEVEN WORLDS COLLIDE (Nettwerk America), which I heartily endorse. They do "There is a Light That Never Goes Out" on that album, too. Plus lots of Tim Finn, Eddie Vedder, Lisa Germano, Sebastian Steinberg, and other guests. Michael - -------------------------------------- Michael J.
