His earlier movie _Vive L'Amour_ (Taiwanese, > don't let the French title throw you) is out on DVD here already, and > has similar virtues. Everything I've seen so far by Tsai Ming-Liang has been amazing. Loneliness/the search for connection depicted intimately is the overriding theme. Part of the appeal of these movies is that we are able to glimpse everyday life in a very different culture (for example, who knew that doorbells in Taipei sound like mournful bird cries?). The camera lingers on the characters for as long as it takes for them to reveal something about themselves (and this is apt to be more through actions as none of them is especially articulate). Surprisingly, these films are quite funny at times, in an authentic, organic sort of way. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 7 Jul 2002 11:36:51 -0500 From: pinkhueylego@hotmail.com Subject: [loud-fans] D.FILM Digital Movie for loud-fans@smoe.org Francis J. I like their second album even better, despite its frankly horrifying title of EXTENDED REVELATION FOR THE PSYCHIC WEAKLINGS OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION -- title (and some lyrics) aside, it sounds kind of like the best bits of '68-'72 Pink Floyd and early Gong to me. Their debut, WELCOME TO THE INFANT FREEBASE, is really all over the place, though; the good parts are great, but it doesn't really hang together as a whole. I swear. Anyway, a few weeks back I read a very strong review of a new Roxy Music live DVD, recorded in Glasgow at the Apollo Theater - a greatest hits lineup from the last (?) date of their reunion tour, released in Regions 2-6. Some web sleuthing revealed an email address for the UK publicist who didn't know anything concrete about a Region 1 release, but did direct me to a US company, whose publicist didn't know anything about it at all. Anyway, today I pull out Viva Roxy Music (playing now and sounding just magnificent, better than I remember even though it's probably my fave Roxy CD, but I digress), and (re)notice that parts were recorded at the Glasgow Apollo and all the cover pics were obvious video grabs. Was this mid-70s vintage concert video ever released? Anybody know anything about a possible Region 1 release of the recent live footage? Her grave is still there. Jesse Hartman apparently starred in a studenty looking movie called "Venus In Furs" with an extremely hot looking Danish chick, which will supposedly be hitting the festivals soon. Festival goers might want to keep an eye out if they're fans of Jesse Hartman, S&M, or hot Danish chicks. I'm hoping that this isn't old news, since the website was a little sparse on dates and things like that. 2. Laptop have a new ep that appears to be out in Norway (I'm not making this up) that has unplugged versions of 3 old Sammy songs. Cool!! Supposedly it comes out in the US in July or August, but I never trust anything when Jesse Hartman is involved. Curious if any of the music reviewers on the list (JRT?) have seen this one.
