Positively the best solo track I've heard is Bruce > Campbell's for _The Evil Dead_. Somebody mentioned the Soderbergh/Lem Dobbs > track for _The Limey_, and that one's incredibly interesting and entertaining > for the sniping between the two of them alone. Altman is not willing to do them. He stated in a recent interview that it's something he feels he has to do, or they'll start calling him uncooperative (again) and they won't let him make any more movies. This may account for the rather dismal commentary on "M*A*S*H", in which he mostly just described whatever was going on onscreen. I don't have "Gosford Park" yet, but I'm told the writer's commentary is much better than Altman's. Commentary comments: Oliver Stone, like him or not, is always fascinating to listen to. On "JFK", he has this meltdown toward the end that is nutty but fun. The out-of-print Criterion edition of "This Is Spinal Tap" has a great track from Michael McKean, Christopher Guest and Harry Shearer; the in-print MGM edition has them in character! "Stop Making Sense" has commentary from Jonathan Demme and all four Talking Heads...recorded separately, of course. From "State And Main", William H. Macy on co-star Clark Gregg: "You know, he's a great writer, he's a great actor, Clark's funny as can be, he's so -- ahh, fuck him." John Frankenheimer is one of my favorite directors, and the commentaries he has contributed to several of his films ("The Manchurian Candidate", "Ronin", "Seconds", "Seven Days In May") may be a little dry, but they are always informative. Cameron Crowe: great filmmaker, mediocre commentary. He gets off track far too easily. Kevin Smith has the same problem; that, and he keeps letting his friends into the room. If Fox ever puts "Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls" on DVD, and they don't have commentary from Russ Meyer, Roger Ebert, and at least three cast members, somebody should get a boot to the head. I have a lot of great commentary tracks on out-of-print laserdiscs; it would be nice if they could be put on DVD someday. Martin Scorsese on "Taxi Driver", "Raging Bull" and "New York New York"; Mike Leigh, David Thewlis and Katrin Cartledge on "Naked"; Terry Gilliam on "The Adventures Of Baron Munchausen" and "The Fisher King"; Anthony Minghella on "The English Patient"; Milos Forman and Peter Shaffer on "Amadeus" (those guys are like Nichols and May, no fooling); Danny Boyle and Ewan McGregor on "Trainspotting". I haven't bought any of these films on DVD (the ones that are available) because I don't want to give up these goodies. Maybe I should burn them onto CDs or something. The documentary on the making of "Jaws" is an hour longer on laserdisc than the truncated one on the DVD. And on the DVD of "Fantasia", Deems Taylor's narration has been rerecorded because, according to someone at Disney, the original was lost or damaged or something. It sounds fine on my laserdisc, and that's why I'm keeping it. > MANOS: THE HANDS OF FATE on DVD would be great of course, but they'd have > to lose the robots. Agreed. I'm a sucker for commentaries, too, but even as excited as I was to get SAY ANYTHING on DVD, I think I nodded off halfway through his commentary. Don Roos' commentary on THE OPPOSITE OF SEX, btw, is just as deadly. > Kevin Smith has the same problem; that, and he keeps letting his friends into the room. His, I think, are a lot of fun and certainly worth watching more than once. The only others that I've felt the need to do this with are the Richard Kelly/Jake Gyllenhaal track on DONNIE DARKO and the David Wain/Michael Showalter/Janeane Garofalo track on WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER (*my* movie that I'm pretty sure no one else but me owns), which is worth it for two jokes by Garofalo that are easily as funny as anything in the movie. Somebody, I think it was Paula, had a really good point which is that if you go into it knowing that it's more a collection of vignettes rather than a wholly satisfying narrative (like BOTTLE ROCKET and RUSHMORE). That way you can enjoy the wonderful performances (especially by Hackman, Stiller, and Huston) and soundtrack, and shrug off the shameful waste of Bill Murray. So what I'm saying is now that you know, you might enjoy it on DVD. I think the movie is entirely worthwhile, if for nothing else, for Hackman who is a marvelous comic actor, but for some reason, never makes comedies! In fact, I can't think of any other comedies he's made other than GET SHORTY, the SUPERMANs, and that cameo in YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN. Needless to say, she also plays that role on the TV show as well. After a few roles in the 80's in which you could see all of her ("Pee-Wee's Big Adventure" -- yay! "Streets Of Fire" -- boo!), she became a voice-over artist, and has worked steadily providing voices for cartoons like "Duckman" and "Rugrats". She was also the voice of Babe the pig, but only in the sequel. She is now usually billed as E. G. Daily. Save your energy -- you'll still be kicking and screaming someday. We all will.
