I remember THE TERMINATOR being the > first tape for first-time VCR buyers in the '80s... My first videotape, laserdisc and DVD I bought (and all before I actually purchased the hardware) are all the same: "The Right Stuff", my all-time favorite movie. When you're sixteen and convinced you should be living on the moon, that picture can just sort of grab ya. I'm still waiting for Warner Bros. to ask me to contribute a commentary track for a special edition DVD. Hey! Fun question (maybe): what's the movie you own (any format) that nobody else you know has? The one that makes people look at you funny when they see it on your shelf. Mine is "The Car", an odd horror movie from 1977 with James Brolin as a small-town sheriff versus an evil car that drives around and kills people. After "Star Wars", it was my favorite film from that year. Evil or not, that car was bitchin'! > I own _The Nightmare Before Christmas_ and absolutely love it. Don't you > think it would make the transition to a musical stage performance quite > well? I wonder why no one has done it yet.... Knowing Disney, it's just a matter of time. The only reasons I can think of for this not happening right now are A) being a seasonal work, Disney may believe it wouldn't rake in any dough January through November; B) maybe -- just maybe -- Danny Elfman was able to retain at least some of the rights to his music, and he won't let Disney touch it with a ten-foot skeleton. Hey! Another fun question (maybe): what's the worst movie-to-stage musical adaptation you can imagine? (Don't say "Carrie", because someone else already imagined it.) I think mine would still be "The Car". What do you do with a problem like The Car, West. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Jul 2002 00:38:09 -0700 (PDT) From: Phil Fleming Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Please...don NOT laugh ! I think what *is* up in the air is when Aimee will get around to working on it, considering that her new album comes out in August and I'm sure she's going to tour extensively. And, yes, the band has broken up. The odds of Scott, Gil, Kenny & Alison playing together again as a unit are approximately a googol to one. Yes! Exactly! If you haven't already (although I suspect you have) Soderbergh's commentaries on the DVDs of OUT OF SIGHT and TRAFFIC are equally sharp, self-deprecating, and flat-out funny. Although I think he's a talented director, he's shot to the top of my "favorites" list precisely because he comes across in his commentary tracks as sounding like he'd be a great guy to drink beers and shoot the shit with. His commentary tracks play out like an audio version of Scott's TINKERS liner notes--they represent an extremely talented individual blessed with humility (real or feigned) and a razor-sharp self-deprecating wit. - ----- Original Message ----- From: Roger Winston To: the sound of the collective grumbling Sent: Wednesday, July 03, 2002 11:57 AM Subject: Re: [loud-fans] movies: Matrix poll > triggercut on 7/3/2002 11:36:32 AM wrote: > > > If Scott Miller did commentary > > tracks for GT and LF albums, he'd sound like Steven Soderbergh. > > Why? I've got zillions of those, seeing as how my DVD collection is way too large and has some foreign discs and anime and such in it. One I can think of off the top o' me head is my DVD of INCUBUS, staring William Shatner, the only movie ever made where everyone speaks only Esperanto. But knowing this group, I'm sure at least 5 of you out there also have it. Especially since we've discussed it before. And Esperanto is the Official LoudFans Language. How about the George Romero flick KNIGHTRIDERS? Actually, I think a friend of mine has that on tape... I didn't rent THE MATRIX for the extras, I rented it to see the movie, since I'd missed it in theatres. As for FIGHT CLUB, the DVD extras are boffo, but I bought it because I loved the film. And if you're avoiding FIGHT CLUB deliberately, I'll just say that it's an amazing leap from SEVEN (which looked and sounded great on the big screen, but didn't have a lot more going for it) to FIGHT CLUB, and that it may not be the movie you expect at all. On the other hand, the upcoming ROYAL TENENBAUMS Criterion set is going to have me in a quandary -- will the extras (wonderful on Criterion's RUSHMORE) be enough inducement for me to purchase what I consider to be the most disappointing film of the last twelve months? I don't find it likely that repeat viewings will retroactively endear the film to me -- more likely that I'll become increasing frustrated with the film's shortcomings. Mediocrity, especially from a group so talented, is much more difficult to endure than outright atrociousness. I have a feeling my MANOS: HANDS OF FATE DVD would get more plays. >On the other hand, ALMOST FAMOUS, with >the three-hour director's cut, the original film and the other extras, is >exactly what I think the format is capable of. Plus as Rog says, it could serve as a color test for your TV and DVD player - -- the reds and blues are that saturated, and that lovely. It's my favorite Soderbergh film, even though the ratings in TV GUIDE and our newspaper have it at two to two-and-a-half (out of four) stars every time I see it listed. later, Miles ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Jul 2002 17:15:42 -0400 From: Dana Paoli Subject: [loud-fans] Tusk (ns) http://www.pitch-a-tent.com/ Anyone got anything to say about it? - --dana ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Somebody told me some of the MST3K party platters let you watch the film non-roboted. Anybody know if that's so, and if so, is MANOS among the anointed? THE CAR is choice. Adore the horn blats, thrill to the Utah landscape footage. And for immortal dialogue, try and top "A young man was gettin' ground into hamburger, I wasn't takin' NOTES!!!" Apparently the Anchor Bay DVD has notes courtesy Jim Knipfel, one of my favorite contemporary writers. Quoth Jim Knipfel: "Yeah, it took them three or four movies before they figured out I was blind!" Trying to figure out how one album can be better than every note ever recorded by Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, the Band, or Emm Gryner, Andy Some American women are so crazy about Hollywood hunk Matt Damon, they are demanding look-alike sperm donors to father their children. The Oscar-winning Good Will Hunting star - who has a hit in his new movie The Bourne Identity - has become a favorite of hopeful single mothers at a Boston sperm bank (coupled moms usually request a donor who looks like the daddy-to-be). John Rizza, director of New England Cryogenics, the region's only photo-matching sperm bank, tells the Boston Herald, "[Matt's] at the top of the list. I think it's a combination of things. What I hear most often is that he has charisma, he's gorgeous, they like the sound of his voice. He has that boyish charm." Rizza says most of his donors are Boston college students; he's still waiting for the actor's contribution. It was so sexy and it made me want to be those people and find that beach. Q: What about the last good book? A: I'm currently reading White Noise by Don DeLillo. That's a great read. Q: What is your best feature? A: I am very honest. You will never get a lie out of me never ever ever. I would rather not say anything than lie. I am not a liar at all. And I get really upset when people are dishonest with me. Q: What is you best physical feature? A: I have nice ears. I have no lobes, which was disappointing for a while, but I've gotten over it and learned to love them. Being lobeless isn't the end of the world.
