And if so, why? Since Nader never had a chance to win, I assume votes >cast for him served some other purpose. As a punitive gesture towards the >Democrats? To send them a message that they have drifted too far to the >right? I guess that living in Ohio where Bush would have won even if all of the Nader voters voted for Gore, it's easier for me to say this, but knowing what I know now I still would have voted for Nader. I did vote for a Democrat at one point--I voted for Bill Bradley in the primary, but I thought the Gore/Lieberman was the worst Democratic ticket of my lifetime and that at this point while the Democratic party may come closer to some of my ideals, in terms of various economic issues there really is no difference between them and the Republicans. Either way, big business rules this country. I would think that with Gore in office the Enron and Worldcom disasters would still have happened, for example. I'm at a point where based on my own values I no longer see it as viable to vote for the lesser of two evils when even the lesser has gone so far away from the principles I stand for that I can't stomach voting for it. I would rather support a theoretical lost cause, not so much to send a message but because I think *the right to vote should occasionally mean voting for someone you believe in rather than simply against someone you don't.* Another big issue for me is that I absolutely hate the two-party system and think it's one of the main creators of politics as "politics" rather than as a way for elected officials either to do what they think is right or what they think those who elected them want, and voting for a third party is at least a way to let them know that 2.5% (or a heck of a lot more when Perot ran) don't support that system. It's possible I'll vote for a Democrat in 2004, and I'll sure vote for one on the primaries, but if it's Gore and/or Lieberman again I'll "throw my vote away" once more. A relative said to me "by voting for Nader you're voting for Bush." I say that he's wrong--a vote for Nader by someone who usually voted for Democrats was a vote against Gore, and that's an important distinction. _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 02 Jul 2002 09:11:22 -0400 From: "Aaron Milenski" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] clothes question (absolutely no musical content) >If you were interviewing for a job, should you dress the way people in that >job dress, which is office casual (elem. school teacher), or should you >wear >a coat n' tie? While upgrading the OS short of a clean reinstall won't deal with the ossproxy problem (accurately diagnosed by others here), I do recommend upgrading the OS. Until last year, I had put off doing so on my home computers because I thought I might take a speed hit by going from Win95B to 98SE on my collection of vintage 1997 PCs (P166 desktop and laptop, PII-266 desktop). However, there were a number of USB-related things I wanted to install which, of course, required Win98 or later. Now everything's on Win98SE, and the performance of all three PCs has actually improved. If they're running slower, I sure haven't noticed, and they all are certainly more stable now. I've heard horror stories about Win98 installation, but all three of my installs (one clean, two upgrades -- and yes, there's a license for each machine) went smoothly as can be, even surviving the power cutting out on my laptop mid-install. I'll let others stump for alternate PC OSes, but if you want to stay in the Wintel world and think WinME or WinXP might require more horsepower than your PC has to offer (likely, since you're still on Win95), you can get Win98 via eBay or other sources. It's usually not much cheaper than a store copy of XP ($70-$80 vs. $99 for the XP Home Edition upgrade), but it could be a good interim solution until you get another machine. later, Miles ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Jul 2002 16:36:32 -0400 From: Dave Walker Subject: Re: [loud-fans] movies: Matrix poll On Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at 03:11 PM, Miles Goosens wrote: > Anyone else notice that the first DVD people buy or rent when they get > their first player is > THE MATRIX? Yep. I think it's the biggest-selling DVD ever. I probably watch my copy about once a month, at least. The second time I saw CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON in the the theater there were two 20-something baseball-cap-wearing dudes sitting next to me. At the end of that first fight sequence (you know, *that* one) once the audience stopped applauding Dude 1 said "Word." Dude 2 said "Dude........*DVD*." How 'bout I give you the finger and you give me my phone call, JS ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Jul 2002 23:14:51 -0400 From: Dave Walker Subject: Re: [loud-fans] movies: Matrix poll On Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at 10:54 PM, steve wrote: > Think of The Matrix as a Hong Kong movie dressed up in sciffy clothes. > Works much better that way. I mentioned to someone that the audience broke out into spontaneous applause at the end of that scene the first time I saw the movie and they looked at me like I was crazy. - -- Dave Walker freeform radio and live, nude fish at: http://www.freeke.org/ffg syndicate inforcrack: http://www.freeke.org/ffg/ffg.rss ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Jul 2002 23:51:13 -0400 From: "John Sharples" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] movies: Matrix poll Dave: >So that did happen other places! Erm...that was actually the source of a rather contentious debate here, I guess you weren't here then, whether that was prompted by fawning media. Not to start it all over again, but since you ask... All I can say is that when I saw the movie for the first time, I was in the middle of final exams and a self-imposed media blackout. I didn't even know Ang Lee had a new movie out till I walked by the theater near my school. I bought a ticket on an impulse and walked in not knowing what the hell to expect. So it starts as this rather studied Chinese melodrama when all the sudden, out of the blue, people start flying around the damn place kicking the shit out of each other. I must have watched the whole sequence with my jaw in my lap. When it was over, I was so moved I found myself applauding wildly, and the rest of the audience joined in. So, I say, genuine. Others disagree. JS ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Jul 2002 00:53:05 -0500 (CDT) From: Jeffrey with 2 Fs Jeffrey Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Please...don NOT laugh ! THere is a new live album out (recordings from the '96 and '98 tours: www.125records.com), and apparently Scott is working with Aimee Mann on a collection of re-recorded acoustic versions of some of his LF songs, but there is no new material and no current plans to form a band and record or tour.
