I'd have asked for some off-list feedback on this subject on the other list I'm on, but most of the members are pre-graduate students, and/or in non-professional positions, so the demographic is inappropriate. And, that list is too slow in corresponding. What you wear shouldn't be so important, but it is, especially if you're being considered for a job. To send them a message that they have drifted too far to the > right? I voted for Nader because 1) he best reflected my views 2) In Minnesota, Bush wasn't a threat to win the state (I can't remember the last time a Republican won MN for President. Probably Nixon). 3) The Republicans and the Democrats are two sides of the same coin, firmly in the pocket of big money lobbyists and corporations. 4) It wasn't about sending a message. It was about MONEY. I voted green to help them get major party status (which they get from getting 5% of the vote). Although they didn't succeed nationwide, they did locally, so now the local greens have a huge influx of cash to help change things at home. Minneapolis now has 2 green party members on the city council. 5) I didn't think Gore was a particularly good candidate, for reasons already stated by others. There is a similar war here, with the local Dems mad at the Greens for running a candidate against Paul Wellstone, who may be the senates most liberal member. Also running is Norm Coleman, former St Paul mayor and big time Bush follower. Opinion polls are split, and a Coleman win could give the Senate back to the GOP, so a lot is at stake. Although, comparing Wellstone to Gore is a bit of a stretch. Probably a lot more than you wanted to know. This is the crux of the matter: a winner-take-all system is intrinsically anti-democratic and inimical to third-party candidates, because it forces the sort of debate we're having here (as well as pushing candidates toward the mushy center most of the time, in search of that one vote that'll push them over 50%). If the goal of an election is for the winning candidate to reflect what most of the people want, winner-take-all seldom can do this, because any number of voters will not vote for whom they want in fear that their vote will effectively favor what they *least* want (i.e., potential Nader voters, like myself, who did not vote for him on the practical grounds that such a vote, here, would have been effectively a Bush vote). But of course such a system would do more to open the door to viable third parties than nearly any other option, and so is opposed by both entrenched parties. - --Jeffrey with 2 Fs Jeffrey J e f f r e y N o r m a n The Architectural Dance Society www.uwm.edu/~jenor/ADS.html ::Some see things as they are, and say "Why?" ::Some see things as they could be, and say "Why not?" ::Some see things that aren't there, and say "Huh?" ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 01 Jul 2002 11:18:52 -0400 From: Stuart Bell Subject: [loud-fans] loudfamily.com Has the site disappeared? or is it just me? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Jul 2002 12:35:11 -0400 (EDT) From: dmw Subject: Re: [loud-fans] loudfamily.com On Mon, 1 Jul 2002, Stuart Bell wrote: > Has the site disappeared? > or is it just me? i'm seeing what looks like sluggishness on an eastcoat gateway server, but hte site is definitely up. where are you? can you sand a traceroute? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Jul 2002 12:21:40 -0500 From: "CJ" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] convincing arguments - plus, a contest! To send them a message that they have drifted too far to the > right? I, like many, have a love/hate thing with politics. The whole process seems futile, yet I keep coming back for more, hoping that *this time it will be different.* Often, I'm pissy enough at election time to throw my vote away for no real reason (1992, Lenora Fulani for president and write-ins and Communists in numerous smaller elections since then). However, in 1996 and 2000 I voted for Nader because I actually like him and I like what he thinks. I may have thrown my vote away (though, as Chris Prew noted, he got that crucial 5% for the Greens in MN this time around), but I threw it at someone I actually respect. So yes, I am glad I voted for him. And speaking of MN politics, I am sad that I won't get to vote for Jesse for governor. I disagree with that guy on a lot of issues, but he sure is fun and he gets all the politics-as-usual folks really riled up. More chaos, please. I could schlep these out to the used CD stores, or I could flog them on eBay, but first I thought I'd give you guys first dibs. Since I'm more into the concept of shelf space than pocket money, these are dirt cheap, with extra incentives for buying lots. All CDs are $5, or 3 for $12. Some of the cases might not be in the best shape, and a few discs are very lightly scuffed, but all of them play in three different CD players, including a disc changer, a boombox and a CD drive. All LPs are $3, or 4 for $10. (If you want a manly pile, email me and we'll talk.) Some of the sleeves are a bit dodgy, with creases or disc rings or cut-out marks, but the albums themselves are all VG or above - played, but not hacked. There's also a special lot sale of $10 plus shipping for 21 albums. Email me and I'll send you a copy of the list, so as not to clog the list with all four pages of it.
