I had been out all day, and was tired. A suspect package was in a Metro station further up the line from the one I was riding, and we all had to get off at the next station. No problem I thought. I had a Carte de visit, good for unlimited rides, and my Plan de Paris. I started walking and walking. I found myself in a narrow open air shopping arcade of sorts, open only to pedestrians. The remarkable thing was it was all white tile. It was beautiful with the sun setting, and the tile shining from the recent rainfall. I couldn't find it the next day, and my wife has never seen it on her numerous trips there. Any folks on this list who've been there know this place?? Support anti-Spam legislation. It's certainly not for > all tastes, and I acknowledge that the whole thing is Too Goddamn Precious > By Half, but that's kinda what I like about it. See, perhaps you're not on Jetset's promotional mailing list - I get all their stuff from Robert Vickers, their promo guy (yes, the ex-Go-Betweens bassist), and so not only do I hear the DbC releases, the "Songs for the Jet Set" series, I also get stuff like the David Candy CD, etc. etc. etc. It's actually sort of an interesting problem: theoretically it shouldn't matter, concerning the quality of one CD, whether or not there are other CDs of similar style out there (unless you fetishize "originality," which I don't). But unavoidably, particularly with things you might value precisely because they're different from whatever's prevailing, the nth in such a series makes less impact than the 1st - even if, had you heard *it* first, you might like it better. What this means for me trying to write a review of the damned thing is I'm a bit torn: someone hearing this for the first time might well love it, but it's very difficult for me to put myself in that listening space. And of course it's also true that many people *looking* for a review of the new Death by Chocolate CD would have heard lots of that stuff before...and therefore might also be getting a bit queasy and oversweetened by now. It's also an interesting CD in terms of the concept of "filler": almost by definition, the whole thing is filler. I mean, in addition to the aforementioned cover of an advertisement, we have a sort of Mini-Me version of the title track, in addition to the title track itself, two or three songs that were on the "Jet Set" comps, a sequel to a track on the last CD...and for all I know right now, the remaining handful of tracks are also similarly insubstantial. Which may be the point... I should say too that I like the concept - I put "A B & C" on a comp tape last year (although I had to edit it down a bit - ran out of time). Okay, I'm rambling on again...at work, and damn but there's nothing to do here today. - --Jeffrey with 2 Fs Jeffrey J e f f r e y N o r m a n The Architectural Dance Society www.uwm.edu/~jenor/ADS.html ::Some see things as they are, and say "Why?" ::Some see things as they could be, and say "Why not?" ::Some see things that aren't there, and say "Huh?" ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Jun 2002 08:14:10 -0700 From: "Andrew Hamlin" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] tk etc >Oh: I've heard (surprisingly) almost nothing but good things about Bowie's >_Heathen_, but haven't heard a note of it yet. Congress begins each session of the Congress each day with a prayer, and of course our currency says, `In God We Trust. But, as I listen to it more, I'm liking it more. The opening song "The Empty Page" should please fans of "Goo" (who seem to be numerous here) as it's in many ways a rewrite of "Dirty Boots." There are moments throughout, in fact, that remind me of an artsier, less Kim Gordon influenced "Goo." Her feature track is the only weak moment on the album, being a typical Kim rant that should have appeared on a Free Kitten CD. The other six songs, though, are nice and expansive and ebb and flow in interesting ways. "Murray Street" is a tough album to review (fans of the band seem to be having trouble agreeing on comparisons) because it mostly seems to take ideas that SY have previously used, but those ideas appear here in much better form than they have in a long, long while. Oh, I'd hate to encourage illegal activity, but it strikes me as the kind of record that would sound very good on drugs. BTW, the CD comes with a link to a secret web page. And, not that it really matters, but the cover art is really nice. On an unrelated note, the new Imperial Teen album "On" is pretty neat, and I've never had anything but bad things to say about them previously. And good lord does it remind me of Unrest. I really wonder if Roddy has ever heard of them, or if this is one of those weird cases where two unrelated bands arrive at similar sounds by different pathways. And I hope that everyone saw the absolutely bizarre Martha Stewart interview today. From now on, whenever I get uncomfortable in a conversation, I'm just going to pull out a knife and start chopping vegetables as tensely as possible. - --dana ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO!
