The album follows 1985's "One Clear Moment" (Warner Bros.), and a pair of compilations -- 1996's "Dreams Fly Away" (Hannibal) and last year's "Give Me a Sad Song" (Fledg'ling). Produced by Edward Haber (who compiled both retrospectives), "Fashionably Late" features several songs co-written with son and fellow singer/songwriter Teddy Thompson, while her daughter Kamila and ex-husband Richard both appear on the album. Other guests include multi-instrumentalist Van Dyke Parks, Rufus Wainwright, Martin and Eliza Carthy, Danny Thompson, Dave Mattacks, Dave Pegg, and Kate Rusby. Following the release of "One Clear Moment," Thompson was stricken with the psychological disorder hysterical dysphonia, which often left her with the inability to produce speech and was thought to be the end of her recording career. In her time away from performing, she continued to write songs, including "Telling Me Lies," which was recorded by Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, and Linda Ronstadt for 1987's "Trio" album, and earned Thompson and co-writer Betsy Cook a Grammy nomination. In September, Thompson will launch a U.S. tour in support of the album, marking her first headlining trek since touring with Richard behind 1982's "Shoot Out the Lights" (Hannibal). That run is well known to fans as being particularly legendary, as it was the storied folk rock duo's only U.S. tour, and they were in the midst of a bitter breakup that ended their marriage later that year. ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V2 #170 *******************************
