This is true for "A Stroke Of Genie-us" - The Strokes ("Hard To Explain") vs. Christina Aguilera ("Genie In A Bottle"). Neither source song is very good, but FHell has matched the urgency of the Aguilera song's lyrics perfectly to the urgency of the Strokes' hook. Three motnhs after I first heard it, I haven't been able to stop listening to it. Also good are the Kraftwerk/Whitney Houston and George Michael ("Faith")/Missy Elliott ("Get Ur Freak On") bootlegs. I'm pretty sure Scott's only really ever had one manager and that was Scott Vanderbilt who pretty much left for a full time job at Enigma around 1985 or so. Scott had turned over ownership of Rational Records to Scott V and while I think it's fair to say Scott V played a fairly big role in moving Game Theory from local unknowns to national cult favorites, Scott V. had far greater ambitions. Now in California there's a law governing conflict of interest to protect musicians and entertainers and that is that a manager can't also be a booking agent. Scott V was very careful not cross this line, both our 1984 and 1985 tours were booked by professionals and I would work to get bay area shows a fair amount. But I believe Scott V failed to recognize the conflict of owning the label and later working for the label the band you manage records with, and this had some fairly huge repercussions for the band. The band had freedom in the studio but had little control of how promotional money was spent and when Scott got to Enigma, I believe the labels interests came first. I recall being on the road and the album being unavailable because the label was focused on Stryper at the time. Essentially, I believe that GT was just a means by which Scott V could introduce himself to the music business and while Scott M enjoyed a fairly healthy amount of artistic freedom, I don't believe that his career development was much of a label prority. I don't think Scott M ever worked with management again and this could explain why he's had a fair amount of difficulty with subsequent experiences. - - Dan V ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 06 May 2002 23:26:12 -0700 From: Michael Zwirn Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Best Bootlegs sorry i forgot the link On 5/6/02 8:23 PM, Joseph M. But I haven't gotten into the rest of the "bootleg" (has a more confusing name ever been used in contemporary music parlance?) scene. Requires faster downloading abilities than I have...
