Interesting. I think it was testimony to the power of second-guessing, at least. They've had a few months to think about which way the plot could have twisted. I thought the alternate history seemed perfunctory at the beginning (much as had last week's seeming conclusion), but it gathered steam. > And, amazingly, they proved that all along they seemed to know what we, > the viewers knew re: Felicity's relationship with Ben. I have a Mumps single/EP, which I always thought was fun but a little too over the top for me. Not exactly melodic pop--more like goofy pop with strident vocals. I never knew Lance Loud was in the Mumps until I saw his obituary (or I should probably say I didn't nkow who Lance Loud was when I bought the single more than 20 years ago). Now that I know the songwriter was gay, the song "Muscleboys" (in my opinion the best of the three snogs on the record) takes on new meaning. _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 02 May 2002 13:59:56 -0400 (EDT) From: jsharple@bls.brooklaw.edu Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Commercial Music Help Quoting O Geier : He did > say he's very selective about what he allows them for. The one that's been killing me: I listen to a lot of AM radio, and for about the past six months the Toyota spot that uses "Bargain" (no soundalike--this is right off WHO'S NEXT) has been airing about four times an hour on WFAN in New York. That was their set opener throughout the INTERBABE tour, and the album looks to be sequenced in the show order, except for being pieced together from two different shows. The first seven songs are the first seven songs from the Hotel Utah (10/5/96), then the next six are the first six from the Bottom of the Hill (8/8/98), then it goes kind of random. They didn't play "Baby Hard To Be Around" (or any other TTOOL songs) at the Bottom of the Hill, so that's a misprint on the 125 website. The 1996 and 1998 LF shows in SF were two of the best concerts I've ever seen in my life, so I'm definitely looking forward to this album, but with two shows squeezed on to a single disc there are a few songs missing, most notably anything from the encores (neither solo version of "24"!). Still, it's a great souvenir for anyone who saw them on those tours, and a prime live sampling for anyone who didn't. I can't think of many instances of artists building a fanbase with a live album, at least since the 1970s with FRAMPTON COMES ALIVE/KISS ALIVE!/CHEAP TRICK AT BUDAKAN,etc. (Did any bands from that era miss out on the live album fad?) And just so I won't be accused of being totally on-topic, even though this might be on-topic because Scott and Gil were at the show, oh well, anyway Gil Ray wrote (Re: Brendan Benson). > I was really wanting to hate this show, hate this > band, hate the songs, and hate all the girls that I > thought were gonna show up for the Brendan Benson and > the Wellfed Boys show at Bottom of the Hill. Oh great, > another pretty boy pop band with ok tunes, that > probably couldn't play their way out of a paper bag > without pretty boy mentor, Jason Falkner hovering > somewhere nearby, yelling out the chord changes. Brendan Benson gets compared a lot to his buddy Jason Falkner, which isn't that fair to him, because for one thing, he's just so damn much better than Falkner (IMO).. Maybe not a better musician, but I think he's a better songwriter, and a much better performer. I'd never seen Brendan live before, and him and the Well Fed Boys are amazing. Since he looks a bit like a young Paul Westerberg, I was reminded of the Replacements (on a good night!). It was nice to meet up with Scott and Gil & Stacey and Sarah Gordon (settling back in the Bay Area after her European sojourn), and interacting with everyone else in the polite, gender/age balanced, pretty decent crowd for a Tuesday night. If I'd ever been inclined to stop going to shows, this is a show that would've make me start going back again. Exactly. I've given up on trying to make Scott's music popular. After nearly a decade of struggle, I'm waving the white flag of surrender. My current goal is simply to make sure his fan base doesn't forget him -- that's why I put so much effort into updating the web site in spite of Scott's retirement. I don't expect anyone who isn't already a LF fan to buy the live album (though perhaps we'll get some orders from Pixies or MBV fans who want to hear the covers). I only hope there are enough diehards that we make back the money we've put into it, and are able to pay a small royalty to the band members. The last straw was their back catalog becoming unavailable through retail & online outlets. I was sad to notice during my last trip to Amoeba's Berkeley store that they had even removed the Loud Family divider card from their "new" section! If I feel bummed out about it, I can just imagine how Scott must feel. No wonder he finally turned his back on the biz! Seconded. And I think that, despite our quibbles over Scott's justifying his "retirement" (as if he should have to do that), he's never been anything but utterly gracious about the support he has received - and I'd like to thank him for his ongoing involvement in the site (via "Ask Scott").
