(AP) -- Although Shaelyn Benson and David Daniels didn't spend much money on their prom outfits, they still attracted plenty of attention. The Wisconsin high school students crafted their Renaissance-style formals out of duct tape and say they only spent about $20 each. The outfits were a hit at the North Crawford High School prom and at a pre-prom dinner Saturday. "Everyone wanted pictures," Benson said. "I think I was the most photographed person there." The couple hopes to win a Stuck at the Prom contest sponsored by Duck Brand Duct Tape. First prize includes a $2,500 scholarship for each winner, and another $2,500. Benson said she created her dress over an old red prom dress that she cut apart and used as backing so her outfit would have some flexibility and movement. For detail, she cut out designs on the bodice in maroon colored duct tape. She also sewed in a zipper so she could easily get in and out of the dress. For her flowers, she carried a long-stemmed rose, also made out of duct tape. Daniels wore black with maroon trim. "We spent about 20 hours on my costume," he said, admitting that his mother did much of the work. Most people will mention Can-Am at www.can-am.ca, and then I'll chime in and mention that their stuff is lovely and all, but I can't see dropping $289 plus shipping for storage for 500 CDs when you can get a 500-CD unfinished pine wall unit from Maverick Designs at www.bostonwood.com for $73. Buy two of those, stack two of the 220s ($29 apiece) on top and have room for 1440 CDs in four feet of wall space for $204 plus UPS shipping. That's storage for all your CDs plus overflow in one spot for less than the cost of one Can-Am unit. Spend an afternoon and paint 'em or stain 'em if you don't like the look of unfinished wood, but I've never bothered. Yeah. I keep all my discs in their stuff, and it's both cheap and effective. I guess it depends what type of small apartment Mark is moving to -- I'd rather have a tall thin shelf using up wall space that a cabinet wouldn't reach, with as small a footprint as possible, but I guess the Can-Am units appeal to people who have other objects to put on top. a ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Apr 2002 17:16:20 -0500 From: Miles Goosens Subject: Re: [loud-fans] CD storage, once again At 05:50 PM 4/23/2002 -0400, Stewart Mason wrote: >At 04:27 PM 4/23/2002 -0500, Kunkel, Mark wrote: >>I seem to ask this question every 6 months or so, and this time (since I'm >>moving soon), I won't misplace your recommendations. Spend an afternoon and paint 'em or stain 'em if >you don't like the look of unfinished wood, but I've never bothered. It all depends on your preferences and the way your living quarters are set up. I think a major factor in the 1995 theft of half of my collection was that the discs were on open shelves in my living room, and potentially viewable from the outside. Sure, having the discs on the open shelves was aesthetically pleasing to me, and the discs were readily accessible, but they were also visible to the guy casing the joint and readily accessible to be stuffed en masse into my own pillowcases and thrown into the thief's car trunk. Therefore a major factor in my future storage decisions has been to get the discs out of sight and into something that locks. Can-Am shelves accomplish both these ends, plus they're modular (I love having two three-drawer units stacked, with a sliding-doors unit for vinyl on top) and the red ones look great in my office. The shelves are built to last, the company ships them in some of the most thorough and protective packaging you'll ever see, and they come in all sorts of colors. Again, it all depends on your situation, but Can-Am was the right choice for me and Melissa, and we're very satisfied customers. later, Miles ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Apr 2002 18:28:11 -0400 (EDT) From: Sue Trowbridge Subject: [loud-fans] Wilco on ATC All Things Considered is devoting nearly a quarter of an hour of today's show to Wilco & Uncle Tupelo. The first time I saw the Replacements, in the summer of 1987 on the PLEASED TO MEET ME tour, they played the Fillmore. They would've had trouble filling up Slim's in the mid-80s, because it hadn't opened yet! > Thus, when they appeared on "Saturday Night Live," they switched > instruments with one another. I've got the Replacements SNL appearance on tape, and there isn't any any instrument switching at all. "Inverness," "Give In World" and "CryptoSicko" are my regulars both because of their accessibility and because they're my favorites. When doing my Best of 2000 mix, I flipped back and forth between "No One's Watching My Limo Ride" and "Motion of Ariel," also good, I think, if you want to introduce Scott to people without frightening them. "Nothing New" and "24" (on my recent 24th birthday themed mix) have also found their way onto mixes lately. This works best if you use a laser to slice each CD in half first, since otherwise, it's rather difficult to extract the 500th disc of a 1000-disc collection. Error correction is a must - either on your CD player or by listening to your CDs only after adequate intake of Jack Daniel. I'm in the pro- jewel box camp - although it must be said that whoever was arguing for Natalie Merchant here earlier has a point. - --Jeffrey with 2 Fs Jeffrey J e f f r e y N o r m a n The Architectural Dance Society www.uwm.edu/~jenor/ADS.html ::beliefs are ideas going bald:: __Francis Picabia__ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Apr 2002 18:07:09 -0600 From: Roger Winston Subject: RE: [loud-fans] Just for kicks, something on-topic At Tuesday 4/23/2002 08:08 AM -1000, R. I think it's the odd timing in the chorus that gets them (and me). That and the ball-bearings. I don't think the melody is particularly hooky either. This works if you have reasonably tall ceilings and lots of wall space...but I store my CDs in the basement, whose ceiling is not very tall, there's not much wall space, plus the floor's kind of uneven, so I don't trust tall units (I've got one which I've secured with wire and some eyehooks, but that was sort of an annoying process). Admittedly, you can't beat the prices here - although I do wish the displays were a little more legible and specific. - --Jeffrey with 2 Fs Jeffrey J e f f r e y N o r m a n The Architectural Dance Society www.uwm.edu/~jenor/ADS.html ::a squid eating dough in a polyethylene bag is fast and bulbous...got me? __Captain Beefheart__ ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V2 #148 *******************************
